About the Author
Barbara Stuart (BSc(Hons), MSc(Syd), PhD(Lond), DIC, MRSC, MRACI, Cchem)
After graduating with a BSc degree from the University of Sydney in Australia, Barbara Stuart worked as a tutor at this university. She also carried out research in the field of biophysical chemistry in the Department of Physical Chemistry and graduated with a MSc in 1990. The author moved to the UK to carry out doctoral studies in polymer engineering within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology at Imperial College (University of London). After obtaining her PhD in 1993, she took up a position as Lecturer in Physical Chemistry at the University of Greenwich in London. Barbara joined the staff at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia in 1995, where she is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Forensic Science. She is presently conducting research in the fields of polymer spectroscopy, materials conservation and forensic science. Barbara is the author of four books published by Wiley, "Modern Infrared Spectroscopy", "Biological Applications of Infrared Spectroscopy", "Polymer Analysis" and "Infrared Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Applications" in the current ANTS series of texts and "Analytical Techniques in Materials Conservation".

Clearly explained (forensic) analytical techniques in a nutshell

I've been looking for a long time for a book that would introduce me to the world of forensic chemical analysis (I'm a chemist).
This book is truly the best one I could have wished for!
"Forensic Analytical Techniques" presents a spectrum of currently used methods in the context of a particular application, such as the analysis of drugs, inks or explosives. Drugs, for example, are dealt with in the chapter of Microscopic techniques (characteristic crystal morphology of the drugs), Separation techniques (drug identification by HPLC), Mass spectrometry (isotopic ratio indicating the origin of the drug) etc.
The techniques are explained in a clear and straightforward way and this is in my opinion the biggest advantage of the book. Even the methods that require a more advanced theoretical background were described in a very approachable way, indicating author's fluency in the topic.
In my opinion, only the self-assesment questions were too little insightful as sometimes the answer was literally written a line before. It is also where I have found a couple of small mistakes (for example in question 4.14).
I would like to recommend the book not only to analytical chemists but to chemist in general, as a intelligible overview of chemical analytical techniques.

Fairly detailed text book. Delves into some of the more current aspects of evidence processing techniques. Recommended for anyone working in a crime lab or in any medico-legal capacity.
