Richard A. Spencer is a professor of classics and biblical studies at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. A Protestant minister for 46 years, he has published commentaries on the New Testament and apocryphal books and written for many religious publications.

Accessible, but Still a Textbook

Although light in tone, Spencer's book is firmly a textbook. This I did not know when I requested it. That made it more challenging for me to read, but also envious of those with the chance to take college courses in Harry Potter. With obvious enthusiasm, Spencer dives into a detailed description on the motifs and themes of the Greek and Roman classics. To start, he explains in his introduction why he only included Greek and Roman classics (as opposed to biblical or near east), why he only consulted the seven books and not the additional material like interviews and Pottermore, and why he thinks Rowling’s use of mythology is important. From there, he moves into exploring the three main characters, as he sees them – Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort. He then writes about Major and Supporting Characters, Magical Beings and Materials, and the Classical Languages used in Harry Potter.
While his knowledge of Harry Potter and Greco-Roman mythology is extensive, I’m not sure there is quite enough for the whole book. Several times, particular in the chapters on Beings and Material and Supporting Characters, it seemed he was stretching a bit to find the connection. Or, assuming Rowling meant more by the name that she really may have (although, he states in the beginning he doesn’t claim to know her mind or motives, and so, he may be right.). I found his Appendix on the “Ring Composition” of Rowling’s work to be most enlightening. Rowling has been called a literary genius for her use of that literary device and Spencer’s appendix makes it clear how deeply woven into the narrative this device is.
While I’m not sure this book would appeal to your average Harry Potter fan, it will appeal to your diehard or academically-minded. And for anyone who also enjoys Greco-Roman mythology, this is a must-read. Spencer’s tone is jovial and accessible, if somewhat repetitive, and although it reads like a textbook, it’s not overly complicated or difficult. I recommend as a fine addition to the library of any Harry Potter fan.

The good news is that this is definitely the last volume of the Clifton Chronicles (as if you'd need to be told this after reading the title of this volume). There's no cliffhanger ending, and all the loose threads have been tied off, including the big one - whether Harry Clifton and Emma Barrington are brother and sister (and they'd committed incest in marrying) or not.

The cliffhanger ending of the previous novel proceeded more or less as expected in this one, so there weren't any surprises.

Jeffrey Archer could have done with a proofreader of the quality Harry Clifton enjoyed in this novel. Some of the medical details he includes are just wrong, and even if they were, events wouldn't have happened the way described (I won't reveal the details in case it's a spoiler). Anyway - a Sotheby's auctioneer would never refer to the Emperor Jiaqing (Jiaqing is the name of an era, not a person). It's the Jiaqing Emperor.

It's a very satisfying series. In a few years, I'll probably go back and reread them, one after the other (it's actually the best way of reading them - not having to wait a year for each new one to be published).

First, you must understand that I view Jeffrey Archer as a god (lower case is intentional...I'm not a complete heretic); Kane and Abel was the first book I ever read for pleasure, and it is the one that launched my love of reading. Lord Archer remains my favorite author, and I'm proud to declare that I've read everything he has published for the general public. However, "This Was a Man" was clearly written with an intent to just tying up loose strings. Sorry, but it was disappointing...I still wouldn't have skipped it...But I expect more from "the master". Please don't hate me Jeff, you're still totally awesome.

Predictable.

It is clear Archer has grown weary of the Clifton and Barrington families. The elements that drew me to the series when I stumbled across the first book have been sorely lacking in the last few. The only reason to read this book is to have closure. I will miss the characters, although they had become just shadows of their former selves. Time to move on.

Nice book and easy to read and follow

Nice book and easy to read and follow. Makes sense to walk and pray based on what you believe or think of an affirmation while you are walking. I got the book as Herbert Benson made reference to it in his book. When I jog or walk, I think a healing affirmation to my self. I believe this helps to elicit the relaxation response. It's a walking meditation. Yet, I am fully aware of when I cross the street or of where I am walking or jogging. It does work better it a park or hiking trails though.

This book just came in the mail today. I read the whole thing in 10 minutes because it's that quick and easy. It's great for someone looking to add their religious beliefs to their walking routine.

A short book, only 76 pages. At first the book seemed to have little content, but the author makes important statements such as
"live the commandment of love" (1 Corinthians 13, verses 4-7), and "to develop our sensitivity to hear and obey the Holy Spirit".
When I reread the book, I discovered that his comments need to thought about carefully, and done daily.
Ken Copeland's books are some of the best Christian books in print. He's a good teacher and he writes clearly.
I like the title of the book: Sensitivity of Heart". What's more important than that for a Christian?

Fun Holiday Read

If you enjoy romance, especially stories set around Christmas, you'll love this story. Julia is a wonderful heroine with a loving family (and some interesting brothers!). Tony is a dedicated psychiatrist at the top of his field. He is covering one evening for a short while in his mother's travel agency when Julia comes in. Her life falls apart when she catches her fiance cheating and Tony is there to pick up the pieces. he is everything her fiance isn't a kind, thoughtful man who looks out for Julia and is willing to put his life on hold to accompany her on the cruise that should have been her honeymoon. It was lovely watching these two people get to know each other and fall in love. Sparks fly between them and of course nothing goes according to plan. A lovely holiday romance, just right for the Christmas season and anytime.

Tony was a psychiatry doctor,but he helped his mom with her agency. He saw a beautiful woman outside and knew she was the one. She came in and booked her honeymoon cruise. She came Back and said it was over.Her fiance cheated on her.Tony told het to go on the trip anyway she did and took Tony with her.They fell in love on the cruise. A great book

This was so enjoyable to read during the holiday season. Mona did a fantastic job with the story to make it feel so true and not just a make believe story.
