A dated survey of Modern Architecture

Unfortunately, this book doesn't hold up very well over time. Hitchcock's study of Modern Architecture is spotty and not very well organized. The most interesting chapters are those on 19th century architecture, which Hitchcock seems most comfortable with. However, the later chapters leave much to be desired. His understanding of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural system is very weak. It is little more than a walk through some of his more famous buildings. He has a better understanding of the European modernists, but here too he presents them in a superficial way that leaves more questions than it does provide answers.
Hitchcock and Philip Johnson have been credited for bringing the European Modern Movement to America with their exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932. They dubbed it "The International Style," a name which has stuck but doesn't do justice to the many currents that ran through Modern Architecture at the time. Hitchcock tried to develop these ideas further in "Architecture: Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries." He provides a wide array of sources, but very little that binds these ideas together. One can find much better overviews of Modern Architecture by Kenneth Frampton and William J.R. Curtis.

Simply the best!

I ordered a "Architecture: Nineteenth and twentieth Centuries" book from midtownscholarbookstore. It was under used and they said it was like new. Guess what!!! I got it and it was in a great shape and I am a hundred and ninety nine percent satisfied. I would totally recommend them to any person looking for a book.

About the Author
Roberto Carfagni is a well-known teacher of Latin by the nature method, developed by Hans �rberg, and has acquired a long experience in the spoken use and teaching of the language. He taught Latin literature in the Academy "Vivarium novum" (Rome) for four years, and has studied the pedagogical ideals of Italian Humanism. He is the author of the "Epitome historiae sacrae" and has recently founded the "Schola Latina" (www.scholalatina.org).

Very useful supplement

This is an exceptionally helpful supplement to Lingua Latina.

I was given a copy for evaluation, and here's what sets it apart:
- Layout similar to the actual text
- Helpful images used in the exercises
- Exercises that go beyond those given in the text: you'll be asked to construct sentences and use vocabulary in ways that either give extra practice for the exercises in the book, or often - and this is the key part - use words and phrases in new ways that the book exercises don't get to.

All in all, a very helpful workbook. No cons to think of - the one reviewer is correct to note that there is no answer key, which would be a helpful addition, but I found the author to be quite friendly by email, and I'm sure that the publisher would be of assistance for any specific questions.

Excellent addition to an exceptional series

This is an excellent text! The exercises are masterfully written to help the student think about the grammar, syntax and vocabulary from each chapter setting without being tedious or requiring the use of an intermediary language. Carfangi created an excellent addition to the Lingua Latina per se Illustrata series, which rivals even the work by the creator of the series, Hans Oerberg. I hope the series continues to grow.

Remarkable level of details. See pictures

I am totally hooked after receiving this atlas. If countries and places interest you, then this atlas is totally for you. I will attach some pictures with my phone next to it, so you can see the level of details for yourself. Extremely impressive. (Of course, you will need a road atlas for finer details). In the age of google maps, an atlas is still great for learning about places or generating ideas. Also, the infographics about demography, natural resources and economy information is quite useful if you are doing business globally. Totally worth your money.

Very good hard cover value

National geographic likes to make easy to read atlases. The ones below this in price are much less complete for showing all the cities, but contain lots of other geographical data. This is the one to use to give you a good idea of the actual country and some of the main roads and railroads. Tables and charts typical to a college atlas. If you want all the info on a particular area laid out on a two page spread, the DK Concise atlas has much of the same level of maps and info. Occasionally selection of the cities and towns is a bit odd. Where is Hammerfest in Norway? Lesser known towns nearby are shown.

The maps often separate one page of physical and one page of political. The text is easier to read on the nearly white back ground than many other atlases of all price classes.

Moving up from this with National Geographic, there is a larger family atlas, with not as much detail, and finally the big coffee table size book that has essentially the same info as this one.
