Written in a simple style but contains a lot of depth & powerful teachings.

Don't be fooled by the simple and somewhat down to earth writing style. It contains a lot of depth if you read it with a suitably receptive mind. I had heard about the traditional practice of 'heart to mind' communication. If you pay attention you may actually get a direct experience of how this works from this book. The feeling is quite like reading a part of the text where an apparently quite simple and straightforward statement has been made, but then you realize a while later that you've understood several more levels of meaning within this apparently simple statement. Some of these cannot be easily put into language - such as the teachings on what 'patterns' really are.

Whilst you can't learn the technical parts of qigong practice from this or his other books you can get something of the essence of Ren Xue- One of the deepest and most wholesome self development systems I've encountered - and i've been looking for over 10 years.

About the Author
A Novel Gothic Novel is the first fictional effort by Hank. The book's characters are each like the author in some way. The artifacts are real. As a faculty member of the University of Minnesota he wrote various academic articles. He majored in Fine Arts, received a Master of Agriculture in Journalism and worked for the Ag Extension Service. Because of wide interests, several careers have filled his years: teaching, illustrating, desktop publishing, selling, mechanic and design jobs kept him busy until he recently retired from the Postal Service. Age limits focus, so writing now joins reading, gardening and travel as favorite pastimes. Memberships include Minnesota's Historical Society, the Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and life membership in Mensa. Family includes a wife, grown kids and several grandchildren. Thus proving everyone can find time to write with a little help from above.

About the Author

Sergio Alberto Gonz�lez, Ph.D., is a full professor of power electronics at the National University of La Plata (UNLP), Argentina. He is also an associate professor of power electronics and motors control at the National University of Quilmes (UNQ), Argentina (since 2000). His research interests have been in the field of power converters, in particular DC-DC converters, resonant converters, and multilevel converters and their application in flexible AC transmission and power quality control.

Santiago Andr�s Verne, Ph.D., has been with the Industrial Electronics, Control and Instrumentation Laboratory (LEICI) at the National University of La Plata (UNLP) since 2003 studying multilevel converters and drives. He is also currently a head teaching assistant in the Electrical Engineering Department at UNLP.

Mar�a In�s Valla, Ph.D., is a full professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the National University of La Plata (UNLP). She is also a member of the National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET). Dr. Valla joined the Industrial Electronics, Control and Instrumentation Laboratory (LEICI) at UNLP in 1980, and since 1998 she has been the head of the power electronics group within LEICI. Her research interests are in the field of power electronics and AC drives. Dr. Valla has been an IEEE fellow since 2010 and a member of the Buenos Aires Academy of Engineering in Argentina since 2007.

A concise but dry outline of the current standards of medical care for mental illness. Psychologists Nathan and Salkind, and psychiatrist Gorman divide the treatments into two basic types, which are often used in combination: psychosocial and pharmacological. After brief introductory notes on finding professional help for those with mental disorders, the authors address 13 categories of illness: disorders of childhood (attention-deficit, conduct), eating, sleep, and sexual disorders, substance use disorders, somatoform and dissociative disorders, depresssion and bipolar disorders, anxiety and phobia disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and disorders of aging. For each, they organize their information into a question/answer format (e.g., ``How common is conduct disorder? . . . Are there specific characteristics of these children's families that make them different from other families? . . . Two of the strongest indicators are a history of criminal behavior and alcoholism''). Advice on how to proceed is brief, sometimes terse, and not always terribly helpful; the summary for anorexia tells us, for instance, that it ``appears relatively infrequently . . . we don't know much about this mental illness, but it is a serious condition that requires medical care''. However, resources for further reading and guidance are given for each disorder. Peter E. Nathan is the University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Psychology and the editor of Behavioral Approaches to Alcoholism and Alcohol Use and Misuse. Jack M. Gorman is Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Deputy Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He is the author of The Essential Guide to Mental Health and The Essential Guide to Psychiatric Drugs. Neil J. Salkind is Professor of Educational Psychology and Research at the University of Kansas and the author of Child Development. Drs. Nathan and Gorman are the coeditors of the prize-winning professional book, A Guide to Treatments That Work (OUP).
