"Wrought Iron Cactus" and other abstractions...

Don Van Vliet remains one of the few rock artists to really succeed, in any sincere way, at least, in the world of fine art. Critically praised for his adventurously dissonant and arrhythmic music that melded free jazz and atonality with rock instrumentation, his visual art exudes a different sort of pleasant cacophony.

Though by no means a major figure in the world of modern art, Van Vliet's drawings and paintings garnered enough attention to appear in solo exhibitions in well-known galleries worldwide. The Michael Werner gallery, for one, in New York featured his work on numerous occasions. The gallery printed catalogs for a few of these shows, one of which dates 1991 and features 12 paintings evoking the moods and colors of the desert. Van Vliet lived in a trailer in the Mojave desert for years and the landscape bled into his imagination. The limited earthy palate and titles such as "Wrought Iron Cactus," "Cactus Blaunch," "Circles Don't Fly, They Float" and "Ghost Lemon" suggest a playfulness that many fans of his music will recognize.

The included paintings veer toward the less anthropomorphic of his work. Abstract and indistinct figures inhabit most of these canvases, devoid of recognizable faces or human forms. A multicolored Rorschach of shapes slither over white space as though suspended on an absent limitless background. The images seem to emerge from an ambiguous and dreamy consciousness or from some amorphous level of the limbic system. But paintings such as "Wrought Iron Cactus," featured on the book's cover, also allow a direct connection to the world. Here an indistinct but recognizable cactus lurks just out of focus as though perceived stripped of all human rational categories. Van Vliet's work seems to thrive in this nebulous realm of abstraction that allows a distancing from the rationally controlled and systematized.

The book's opening essay does contain plenty of the inevitable artspeak, but it also contains many interesting observations about modern life and interpretations of Van Vliet's work. It speaks of our repression or socialization that produces convenient falsehoods and of art's purpose of depicting the world beyond human understanding. The author credits Van Vliet's work for embracing the contingent, which many have trouble comprehending or facing, but which these paintings take on wholeheartedly and without remorse.

The book is small in length, about 50 pages, and also in dimension. It probably takes up a little more space than the average mass paperback. Though it's also very well constructed in hardcover and the prints appear on thick, high quality glossy paper that look great despite the size. As elsewhere, here size really doesn't matter.

That Van Vliet managed to straddle the fringe of both musical and visual art remains a remarkable, and largely unappreciated, achievement. Though not all fans of his music will make an appreciative leap to his paintings, a definite continuity exists between the two realms. A naked and unabashed exploration exudes them both as well as a defiant but never self-righteous or pretentious confidence. No shame, just play. Many Beefheart fans will also instantly notice the verbal wordplay of his song lyrics in the paintings' titles. This feature in particular bridges the gap between the two genres.

This and many other books of Van Vliet's art remain difficult to find. Most of them accompanied exhibitions of limited time frame and audience and so were printed in correspondingly limited numbers. But of course the vast internet marketplace has made acquiring these books much easier. And since no single definitive retrospective has yet appeared of Van Vliet's artistic output, books such as this one remain an invaluable source for studying the visual side of this very unique and versatile artist.

About the Author
Fawzieh A. Bader is an author of several works and a long-time educator.
She specializes in teaching Arabic as a foreign language. She has over 30 years of experience in teaching the language, and culture, at numerous levels and to students from extensive backgrounds, varying academic levels, and a broad range of professions. She served as an instructor at the University of Jordan (Languages Center) for 10 years.
Her experience extends to teaching both colloquial and classical Arabic dialects, in addition to teaching grammar, reading, writing and conversational skills, Arabic language usage in specific areas, like politics, economics, and human rights issues, and instructing on methods for teaching Arabic as a foreign language. She also helped students prepare for international Arabic proficiency exams, such as the CASA exam.
She holds a Master s Degree in the Arabic language, with additional backgrounds in education and psychology.

Clear & easy to follow

The book helps you build a logical understanding of the language in an every day context of use. The reading and comprehension texts are followed by exercises and vocabulary that you can relate to daily encounters. Its cultural insight is very helpful in drawing a picture of the Arab world to students of the culture as well as the language. The CD is a very good way to check your pronunciation against that of a native Arabic speaker. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Arabic in a straightforward and intuitive way.

About the Author

Dr. Hal Wissel has a wealth of experience in the National Basketball Association as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and New Jersey Nets. Hal was also director of player personnel with the Nets and scout and special assignment coach with the Milwaukee Bucks.

As a collegiate head coach, Wissel compiled more than 300 wins. He turned losing programs at Trenton State College and Lafayette College into conference and division champions, respectively. Wissel led Florida Southern College to four straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament and three straight trips to the Division II final four (’80, ’81, and ’82), winning the Divi�sion II national championship in 1981. Wissel coached Fordham University into the 1972 NIT Tournament and also coached the Dominican Republic national team in 1975.

Wissel founded Basketball World and CoachWissel.com, instructional ventures featuring basketball camps, clinics, books, and DVDs. Basketball World’s highly succes�sful Shoot It Better Mini Camps are conducted worldwide for players from youth level to NBA and WNBA level.

Wissel received a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College, a master’s degree from Indiana University, and a doctorate in physical education from Springfield College. Wissel’s best-selling book Basketball: Steps to Success has been translated into eleven languages. Wissel is also the author of Becoming a Basketball Player: Individual Drills, which has been made into a DVD. Wissel has also produced five basketball shooting DVDs.

Wissel’s honors include being named Coach & Athlete magazine’s Eastern Coach of the Year in 1972; Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year (’79, ’80, and ’81); and Division II National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1980. Wissel has been inducted into the Florida Southern College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame, and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hal and his wife, Trudy, reside in Suffield, Connecticut, and have five grown children and one granddaughter.

Good for elementary, middle and high school age

My husband is a High School PE teacher, and uses this book because it has a lot of different drills in it. It starts with the basics, so these lessons could work well with elementary, middle, and high school. Teaches skills in progression and also for different skill levels. This would be good for anyone who is trying to facilitate learning, even those who have no knowledge of basketball, including offensive and defensive strategies. Great ideas to implement in class.

About the Author
A. Bruce Wells was born in Louisville, KY in 1954 and became a Christian in 1977. He began working in the ministry in 1979 and in 1983 left secular employment for full time ministry. That same year Bruce formed BEAUTIFUL FEET MINISTRIES, INC. the non-profit organization under which Bruce would work as a traveling minister, missionary, and pastor. Invitations to speak to a large variety of churches has taken Bruce to 48 states and a number of foreign countries including New Zealand, Australia, Peru, and England. His teachings on Easy Evangelism have been requested and used in quite a number of countries due to the popularity of the series. Many pastors have said that it is the best teaching series on evangelism they've ever heard and it has helped thousands of inexperienced Christians lead others to Christ. Bruce and his wife Marsha love being around the water and they enjoy the perfect winter weather of southern Florida. They have lived on the east coast of FL since 1999 with their 3 sons, Joel, Nathan, and David, all musicians like their dad, and Bruce still travels worldwide in ministry. He continues to write and enjoys playing, writing, and producing worship music. Life is good.

Outstanding; Financial Grace and Wisdom without the Legalism. Who knew?

Wow! Thank God for this book! What an incredible gift, for us to be able to actually hear the same Holy Spirit who gave Solomon his wisdom, Abraham his wealth, and led Jesus and His followers into successful ministries. God knows virtually everything about every person, investment, and situation on the planet, and I'm amazed at how hungry this book has made me to know the Holy Spirit better. Mr. Wells' book is very uplifting and full of hope for anyone who needs God's help. It is chock full of testimonies and promises on how God can, and will, talk to us about anything we could possibly need to know. This book is more about the Holy Spirit's leading than money, and now, more than ever, I want a walking, talking relationship with God as Wells convincingly writes about in this book. If you don't want more of God, don't get this book. But, if you do, buy it now!

The Bible affirmed fact that God will help us to make money, without all the legalism that is usually taught, is probably a major revelation for most of us. After reading this book, I feel totally released from the limitations and burdens placed on me from my religious background. I finally feel that I'm really part of God's family, and that He actually "wants" to bless me. The guessing and mystery of obtaining God's help with money matters is finally solved.

Eye Opener

I loved this book! I would give it 10 stars if they would let me. I was immediately hooked when I read the excerpt on the back of the book that pointed out how, when Peter needed money for taxes, Jesus simply told him where to find the money he needed. How easy is that? There was no jumping through the usual religious hoops, no rebuke from Jesus, no fellow disciples trying to tell Peter why he was in that situation and that being poor was a good thing; and there was no period of "financial probation," as is often implied in the church, before God would meet this very real financial need. This is probably way too much grace for most of us, but it's still true!

What a concept? Financial provision as a part of redemption and grace, without having to prove that you deserve it! Believing that God will actually talk to us, and lead us to financial opportunities simply because we belong to Him, is almost too good to be true, but the abundance of scriptures mentioned in this book are incontrovertible, and it is true. As with Wells' other books, this one is very liberating, sensible, and full of useful information. Thank God for Wells and others like him who are able to take a simple subject that has been polluted and made to be difficult, and bring it back to the uncomplicated, raw basics that will work for anyone. The Gospel truly is good news when the confusion has been stripped away.

The Church needs to know the Fullness of each believer's redemption through our salvation which includes a new life in Christ, divine healing, prosperity, and wealth. Bruce Wells does an excellent job of teaching believers Whose they are and what was guaranteePulpit in my Kitchend to them individually upon The Cross of Calvary 2,000 years ago. He dares the reader to forsake tradition and legalism for a new found freedom in Christ by examining God's Word and challenging us to believe God for the ENTIRE package of grace in the "now". This book is both practical AND scriptural.It is must reading for those who chose to do it Christ's way, not man's.

About the Author

Kim Gordon is an artist, musician, producer, fashion designer, writer, and actress. She is a founding member of the experimental post-punk band Sonic Youth. Following the breakup of Sonic Youth, Gordon formed the group Body/Head. A collection of her early critical art writing entitled Is It My Body? was released by Sternberg Press in January 2014. Recent art exhibitions include a show of paintings through the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles and the show The City Is a Garden at 303 Gallery in New York. She lives in New York and Los Angeles.

I wanted so badly to LOVE "Girl in a Band

I wanted so badly to LOVE "Girl in a Band." A lot had been written on the internet regarding this book; a scathing excerpt here concerning Courtney Love, another about Thurston Moore, etc. By the time the book came out, I bought into the hype. I couldn't wait for equal parts Sonic Youth history from the source, '80s NYC life, behind-the-scenes '90s alternative s*** talking, and scenes from a failed marriage.

In reality, "Girl in a Band" manages to offer all of that, just never fully. We get an interesting background about her upbringing, her childhood, moving around the world at a young age. From there, Kim Gordon focuses on growing up in the '60s, her budding love of the art, and her travels around the country, offering up interesting, albeit brief tidbits and interesting namedropping along the way.

Upon explaining her arrival in New York, Gordon tackles the Sonic Youth sections by focusing on each album. At first, I was excited when she presented the history so concisely. However, Kim Gordon speeds through each album so quickly, it's sometimes disappointing. She tends to focus on certain sections of lyrics rather than the dynamics of the band at the time, or their travels, recording, etc.(for a easily enjoyable book on the history of Sonic Youth, check out "Goodbye 20th Century" by David Browne). While many sections offera fresh perspective, I can't help but wish she would have expanded on certain areas.

The book is a quick read, at times very well constructed, and page turning. However, certain section are written as if it managed to dodge an editor, suddenly taking on a sloppy casual tone following a well crafted previous chapter. All in all, Kim Gordon's memoir is a welcomed addition from a strong female voice and true artist. At the end of the day, I wished this book could have been longer. It left me wanting more in a "there's more to say" sense rather than "I can't put it down." In the end, if all of the story hasn't been set straight, at least we have a glimpse into the mind of a living legend.

a subtle personal memoir

This isn't a rock'n'roll memoir, nor is it a play by play on sonic youth through the years. Instead it's a subtle memoir about a thoughtful artist who was in a highly influential band as well as other artistic endevours. There are insights into the band but very little if that's what your specifically after.

I'm only a cursory fan of the band. I respect them completely and to me they have been incredibly important to modern music, especially what's often called 'alternate'. So I thoroughly enjoyed this book for what it is and highly recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in an artist that has more time for creating art than overthinking it.

The insights into feminism were something I greatly appreciated (as a guy). Her approach to finding a truth to this while also performing in a highly sexualized arena were-like most things she seems to do-subtle, informed, clever and progressively inclusive.

Kim Gordon is a mysterious icon. This memoir offers an insight into the voyage of her life and the love of art that has driven her to create. It lessens the mystery and makes her a greater inspiration.

Incredible. I don't know much about Sonic Youth, ...

Incredible. I don't know much about Sonic Youth, but I have always been aware of Kim Gordon, partly because my daughter who is 17 has always thought Gordon is the coolest person ever, not that i am really sure what that means. My daughter wanted the book so I got it and six hours later I had read it and gotten my socks blown off. Kim Gordon can WRITE with a capital W, and her scenes of growing up in LA and new york in the 1970s and the early 1980s are just incredible and I even found myself looking for Sonic Youth videos on YouTube (not my kind of music but it doesn't matter). Read this one you won't regret it.
