The fountain pen as we know it today developed over thousands of years, from the simple stylus used for cutting marks into clay tablets, to the brush, through the reed, the quill, and the steel-nib dip pen, and finally to the self-contained fountain pen.The advent of electronic communication of the written word has failed to dim the appeal of the fountain pen, and names such as Parker, Waterman, and Sheaffer remain household names.Covering the complete history of the fountain pen, this guide offers useful advice on how to build a collection and where best to look for fountain pens, from cartrunk sales to the internet.

Useful book for beginners, clear and enthusiastic
By Bill y
Twydle's short book provides enough detail for a beginner. It is not a definitive book but gives the highlights of important pen manufacturers, explains the basic mechanics of fountain pens, some of their history and some interesting photos. One picture is even a bit racy, showing that even pens can be made exciting. I would have liked to see a bit more about the instruments surrounding antique pens, such as ink wells, blotters, etc. This book is worth the money if you are just starting out.

It covers just about all of the brands and gives you a quick history of that brand. Has beautiful pictures of fountain pens from yesterday and today! You will be surprised at what this man's father had to say about Montblanc!

This book is not only worth the money to pay for it, it is worth the time to read it.
By Bill Trav
I just finished reading Chris Fox's "Lifelong Writing Habit." This is an excellent book for everyone, not just writers. Fox explains how to make good habits easy to form and bad habits more difficult. The text is straight forward with no fluff or filler. The author does one more thing that I like. I don't like to stop reading to do exercises, so he makes a list of the exercises at the end of the book, so those of us who like to read the whole book first, can still do the exercises without having to go back through the book to find them.

This book gives you tools - you need to supply the motivation
By Nina
As I used to have a working consistent writing habit - but slipped - this book didn't necessarily contain a ton of new information for me. That said, it was a nice, no-nonsense reminder of the things required to set up a consistent habit. It will likely also be useful to writers who haven't managed to establish a routine yet, but my guess is it will be most effective for those who already have a strong internal drive. This book gives you tools - you need to supply the motivation to actually use them.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Oxford World's Classics), by Frederick Douglass

"I was born in Tuckahoe. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant."

So begins the now-classic personal account of Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), who was born into slavery in Maryland and after his escape to Massachusetts in 1838 became an ardent abolitionist and campaigner for women's rights. His Narrative, which was an instant bestseller upon publication in 1845, relates his experience as a slave, the cruelty he suffered at the hands of his masters, his struggle to educate himself, and his fight for freedom.

Written with much passion, and with no small degree of striking biblical imagery, the Narrative came to assume epic proportions as a fundamental anti-slavery text, an accessible record in which the author had carefully crafted both his life story and his persona. The introduction and notes for this new edition fully examine Douglass--the man and the myth--while also considering both his complex relationship with women and the enduring power of his autobiography. Other highlights include extracts from Douglass's primary sources and examples of his writing on women's rights.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-This classic text in both American literature and American history is read by Pete Papageorge with deliberation and simplicity, allowing the author's words to bridge more than 160 years to today's listeners. Following a stirring preface by William Lloyd Garrison (who, nearly 20 years after he first met Douglass, would himself lead the black troops fighting from the North in the Civil War), the not-yet-30-year-old author recounts his life's story, showing effective and evocative use of language as well as unflinchingly examining many aspects of the Peculiar Institution of American Slavery. Douglass attributes his road to freedom as beginning with his being sent from the Maryland plantation of his birth to live in Baltimore as a young boy. There, he learned to read and, more importantly, learned the power of literacy. In early adolescence, he was returned to farm work, suffered abuse at the hands of cruel overseers, and witnessed abuse visited on fellow slaves. He shared his knowledge of reading with a secret "Sunday school" of 40 fellow slaves during his last years of bondage. In his early 20's, he ran away to the North and found refuge among New England abolitionists. Douglass, a reputed orator, combines concrete description of his circumstances with his own emerging analysis of slavery as a condition. This recording makes his rich work available to those who might feel encumbered by the printed page and belongs as an alternative in all school and public library collections.

Review
Douglass did not know much about himself. Rather vaguely, he was aware that he had been born somewhere around 1817; he had seen his mother "to know her as such" no more than four or five times in his life, usually very briefly and at night, and he grew up knowing nothing better than the life of the stalled ox or the mule, a wholly owned creature with no rights that anyone was bound to respect. More than one hundred years later, [this] account of the things men can do to those who are completely in their power is something to make the blood run cold. If there was a kindly, human side to chattel slavery, this man who lived far outside of the cotton belt, who was for long periods a trusted house servant, who was even hired out (by his owner) to work in a shipyard, far from the eye of the man with the whip--this man, who should have seen that humane side if any slave could see it, never got a glimpse of it. "But for the hope of being free," Douglass wrote, "I have no doubt but that I should have killed myself." (Bruce Catton American Heritage)

Harvard has done us all a service in reviving [Douglass'] most important work. (Jim Walls San Francisco Sunday Chronicle)

A Woman's Life in Slavery
By Robin Friedman
Harriet Jacobs' (1813-1897) "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is one of the few accounts of Southern slavery written by a woman. The book was published in 1861 through the efforts of Maria Child, an abolitionist who edited the book and wrote an introduction to it. The book had its origin in a series of letters Jacobs wrote between 1853 and 1861 to her friends in the abolitionist movement, notably a woman named Amy Post. Historically, there was some doubt about the authorship of the book and about the authenticity of the incidents it records. These doubts have largely been put to rest by the discovery of the letters.
The book indeed has elements of a disguise and of a novel. Jacobs never uses her real name but calls herself instead "Linda Brent." The other characters in the book are also given pseudonyms. Jacobs tells us in the Preface to the book (signed "Linda Brent") that she changed names in order to protect the privacy of indiduals but that the incidents recounted in the narrative are "no fiction".
Jacobs was born in slave rural North Carolina. As a young girl, she learned to read and write, which was highly rare among slaves. At about the age of 11 she was sent to live as a slave to a doctor who also owned a plantation, called "Dr. Flint" in the book.
Jacobs book describes well the cruelties of the "Peculiar Institution -- in terms of its beatings, floggings, and burnings, overwork, starvation, and dehumanization. It focuses as well upon the selling and wrenching apart of families that resulted from the commodification of people in the slave system. But Jacobs' book is unique in that it describes first-hand the sexual indignities to which women were subjected in slavery. (Other accounts, such as those of Frederick Douglass, were written by men.) The book is also unusual in that Jacobs does not portray herself entirely as a hero but describes the nature of the steps she took to avoid becoming the sexual slave of Flint. Thus, when Flint subjected her to repeated sexual advances from the time Jacobs reached the age of 16, she tried to avoid him by beginning an affair with a white, single attorney with whom she had two children. When Flint's advances persisted, Jacobs formed the determination to try to secure her freedom.
The bulk of the book describes how Jacobs hid precariously in a cramped attic for seven years waiting for the opporunity to secure her freedom. There are also accounts of her prior attempts to leave slavery, including a particularly harrowing account of several days in a place aptly named "Snaky Swamp."
Jacobs describes her relationship with her grandmother, a free black woman who was probably the major inspiration of her life. She also describes well her love and concern for her children, conceived through the liasion with the white attorney.
This book offers a rare perspective on American slavery as it affected women. It is also a testament, I think, to the value of literacy and knowledge as an instrument for winning and preserving free human life. Although this story is not pretty, it is a testament to human persistence in the face of adversity and to the precious character of human freedom.

Poignant
By MarvelousMarla
This autobiographical condemnation of the south's Peculiar Institution puts a face on the suffering of the enslaved. American history is full of accounts of slavery which tend to broad overviews of the institution, whereas this book is written by an escaped slave who does not flinch at sharing every detail of her miserable life. Unlike other narratives which distorted the slave's voice through the perspective of the interviewers/authors who were notorious for exaggerating the uneducated slaves' broken english, this book is largely Ms. Jacobs' own words. She was taught to read and write as a child by a kind mistress, so she was able to put her thoughts on paper with clarity that surprised many. Ms. Jacobs had an editor, but this book seems to be her unfiltered view of the world.
It is one thing to hear about how slaveholders took liberties with female slaves, it is quite another to read in stark detail about women being commanded to lay down in fields, young girls being seduced and impregnated and their offspring sold to rid the slaveholder of the evidence of his licentiousness. The author talks about jealous white women, enraged by their husbands' behavior, taking it out on the hapless slaves. The white women were seen as ladies, delicate creatures prone to fainting spells and hissy fits whereas the Black women were beasts of burden, objects of lust and contempt simultaneously. Some slave women resisted these lustful swine and were beaten badly because of it. It was quite a conundrum. To be sure, white women suffered under this disgusting system too, though not to the same degree as the female slaves who had no one to protect them and their virtue. Even the notion of a slave having virtue is mocked. The author rejected the slaveholder's advances and dared to hope that she would be allowed to marry a free black man who loved and respected her. Not only was she not allowed to marry him, she was forbidden to see him or speak to him again.
The author shows us the depth of a mother's love as she suffers mightily to see that her children are not also brought under the yoke of slavery. Though she was able to elude her odious master, she does take up with some other white man in hopes that he would be able to buy her freedom. Her "owner" refuses to sell her and tells her that she and her children are the property of his minor daughter. Her lover seems kind enough as he claims his children and offers to give them his name, and he did eventually buy them, though he failed to emancipate them to spare them from a life of forced servitude. Ms. Jacobs noted that slavery taught her not to trust the promises of white men. Having lived in town most of her life, Ms. Jacobs is sent to the plantation of her master's cruel son to broken in after she continues to refuses his sexual advances. She is resigned to this fate until she learns that her children -- who were never treated like slaves -- were to be brought to the plantation also. It is then that she takes flight.
After enduring 7-years of confinement in cramped quarters under the roof of her grandmother's house, the author escapes to the North which is not quite the haven she imagined. Still, it is better than the south, and she makes friends who buy her freedom leaving her both relieved and bitter that she is still seen as property to be bought and sold like livestock. In New York Ms. Jacobs is reunited with her children and a beloved brother who'd escaped a few years ago while accompanying his master -- her former lover -- to the free states.
There is no fairytale ending to this story because the author endures plenty of abuse and uncertainty even after she makes it to the North. She is hunted down by the relentless slaveowners who were aided by the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 and "The bloodhounds of the North." This is a wrenching account of this shameful period of American history, and should be required reading for all.

Still a moving testimony
By Adirondack Views
I often believe it is easy to criticize nineteenth century Americans for not stepping up to the plate regarding the issue of slavery and race in America. Jefferson may well have agonized over the issue he called the "death knell of the nation" and which he labeled a "neccessary evil." Certainly he benefitted by the ownership of nearly 300 slaves, but he grew up in a world in which slavery was the norm. It takes a revoutionary and remarkable man to truly stand against the only world he knows and move to create a different world, so I usually defend Jefferson and his political vision which clearly transcended that world.
Reading Frederick Douglass, however, makes me wonder how anyone with firsthand knowledge of the institution could not see the obvious pain and cruelty which existed right in front of his or her eyes. Douglass's narrative, and particularly his descriptions of the slave trade in Baltimore and the obvious place of the whip (whether used or not) as the principal vehicle of social control argues most eloquently that though the slave system may have been a social norm, the blinders had to be unbelievably thick not to see the horrors that the institution wrought. The relationship of slave and master perpetuated a most un-American (at least in terms of our professed values--cf. Douglass's later antislavery orations) tyranny and oppression. Douglass's narrative testifies that our ancestors could have seen much more and done much more and that 600,000 lives and a subsequent 120 years of racial schism and pain was too much a price to bear for the peculiar institution.

Enterprise Architecture - A Pragmatic Approach Using PEAF, by Kevin Lee Smith

PEAF is also available as a POET+PEAF Box Set. (ISBN: 978-1-908424-28-0)

PEAF (ISBN:978-1-908424-10-5) inherits and builds on POET (ISBN:978-1-908424-07-5). Therefore reading and understanding PEAF requires that you have previously read and understood POET.

PEAF does not tell you how to be a CxO, Executive, Strategic Planner, Enterprise Architect, Business Architect, Solution Architect, Portfolio Planner, Portfolio Manager, etc, etc, etc.

What PEAF does do is expose a holistic environment and context of Methods, Artefacts, Culture and Environment that all of those people exist within. The glue that brings all the parts together into a choreographed whole which makes the whole so much more than just the summation of its parts.

PEAF asserts that people working within the Strategising and Roadmapping phases of Transformation already know how to do what they do. The problem is not them. The problem is the context (Methods, Artefacts, Cultural and Environmental things) that they are forced to work within.

PEAF aims to increase the maturity (effectiveness and efficiency) of that context, enabling people to achieve their full potential. Increasing the maturity of the context they work within, to one that supports, enables and makes their work easier rather than one which hinders, impedes and makes their work more difficult.

PEAF places its emphasis on the one practical issue that causes the most problems for EA efforts: how to get started and keep going, delivering real and verifiable results within the constraints and complex, challenging realities of any large Enterprise.

PEAF was born out of failure - out of identifying all the myriad of ways in which EA efforts fail in real business practice, and then devising ways to prevent these sources of failure from occurring.

Excellent framework for EA that is further improved through this book.
By Keith Frampton
The Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture (PEAF) developed by Kevin Lee Smith is a proven and increasingly used very effectively by enterprises across the world. This is the 3rd edition that has many small improvements and also placed within the larger and wider framework for enterprise transformations called POET (Pragmatic Ontology for Enterprise Transformation).
PEAF has many strengths and unique points of differentiation from other Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks. These include the explicit inclusion of organisation culture and its importance for EA, extensive coverage of the importance and impact of change on people from EA efforts, and above it is approachable, relatively simple to understand and extensively proven and increasingly used in organisations across the world. The book captures this and also educates through its use of example, clear descriptions, and explicit coverage of the usual objections and questions asked about EA.
The book would be improved by the use of diagram captions, larger easier to read diagrams and an index to encourage spontaneous usage.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Enterprise Architecture and its use and value within any organisation. It is, as usual for Kevin Smith’s material, thought provoking, even if the extensive use of pastel colours is initially unusual for a book of this type!

Newspaper Design Handbook 5th Edition----An Effective and Well Presented Handbook on the Subject!
By D. Arter
Simple, clear, concise, and accurate presentation of the elements of newspaper design. Concepts are well defined. Author is a clear communicator and his writing style augments the value of the information he is presenting. There are ample visual designs presented in is book and elements of typology, template formatting, page design, font sizing, and visual organization are especially useful for beginners in newspaper design. Question and answer quizes reinforce the concepts in the material. Have no doubt, author Tim Harrower is an excellent writer and he presents key concepts with verbal and visual support. This book is especially good for beginning visual media design related to creating newspapers. It is something that both journalism and visual media teachers can use for their beginning students in highschool and junior college classroom situations. A big plus for this Newspaper Designer Handbook. Beginning issues present in this handbook can be applied to later visual media design and may prove useful in understanding beginning concepts in InDesign software by Adobe.

10 stars! Content, clarity and concision. Couldn't be done any better.
By James
I stumbled onto a YouTube video from a high school newspaper sponsor saying that this is required reading. I bought it. It far exceeds my greatest hopes. The content is complete. The information is clear. It is concise. It is precise.

Buy one of these, download a copy of Scribus and get going. Whether you are working on an existing school, college or community paper, or want to start your own niche newspaper; this book is every bit as essential as a printing press. BTW, consider [...] if you're starting something of your own. They just might be everything you need.

Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life, by Janet Potter

Wilfred Owen is the “Poet of Pity,” whose realistic portrayals of war gave voice to the soldier wounded, captured, or killed—not just in the Great War but in every war since, so great is the evocative power of his work. Although he saw only five poems published during his lifetime, Owen left behind a wealth of letters and poetry that together form a powerful legacy.

This generously illustrated book tells the story of Owen’s life and work, from his birth in 1893 to his tragic death just one week before the signing of the armistice that would end the war. The shocking realism of poems such as “Strange Meeting” and the angry disillusionment of “Anthem for Doomed Youth” reveal Owen’s transformation from a romantic youth steeped in the poetry of Keats to a mature soldier awakened to the horrors of the Western Front.

Drawing on numerous manuscripts, artifacts, and family photographs, this book gives a comprehensive view of the relationship between the poet’s lived experience and his writing that will appeal equally to both those well-versed in Owen’s work and those seeking a well-researched, accessible introduction.

Review
“A visually stunning book. . . . In Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life, Potter pairs an in-depth biography alongside integrated photographic and archival material, much of which has never been in print. This slim but versatile book would serve well as an introduction to Owen for undergraduates as well as a selective resource for academics interested in the poet’s life and writing process.” (ELT Journal 2015-12-15)

About the Author

And bugles caling them from sad shires
By Glynn Young
In September, the Bodleian Library, Oxford published “Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life” by Jane Potter. Owen (1893-1918) has been the subject of `six recent biographies (not to mention others less recent). With Rupert Brooke, Owen is at the front of the line of the groups known collectively as the “World War I poets.” He is one of 16 World War I poets commemorated with a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey.

Potter’s illustrated history of his life is deceptively simple looking, almost like the kind of biography you might find in a middle school library. But it is carefully crafted, extraordinarily well researched, and engagingly written, drawing upon the extensive correspondence he maintained with his mother, his poetry, and a considerable number of sources and photographs from the English Language Faculty at Oxford.

The oldest of four children, he was the son of a railway clerk who had dreamed of settling in India and a mother who was decidedly evangelical. As he matured, he was undecided (or indecisive) about a profession or line of work, until the war intervened. He also had been writing poetry.

Owen didn’t enlist in the British Army until 1915. In 1917, suffering from what was then called shell shock (and what we today call Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, or PTSD), he was sent to Craiglockhart, a hospital in Scotland specializing in shell shock cases. There he met Siegfried Sassoon, who had been sent to the hospital for a very different reason – to avoid a court-martial for a letter he wrote opposing the war (I posted an article on Sassoon’s The War Poems this week at Tweetspeak Poetry).

The friendship with Sassoon was pivotal for Owen’s poetry. Manuscripts of his poems with Sassoon’s emendations still exist (one is on display at the Imperial War Museum). His poetry changed and grew. It began to be noticed, and published.

Potter walks us through each phase of Owen’s short life, using pictures of childhood, family, friends and the military. Each section includes his poems at the end, adding a poignancy to the text. You look at the pictures of the young, the hope and expectancy in his face, and read his poems, and in a few short pages see a life of promise cut short.

One of his best known poems is this one:

Anthem for Doomed Youth

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
— Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Owen almost survived the war. On Nov. 4, 1918, he was shot and killed by enemy fire alongside a canal. A week later, on Armistice Day, his parents were informed of his death.

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

Beautiful color pictures. Detailed useful advice for the new beekeeper.
By Michael Bush
This book is VERY useful for anyone starting out in bees. Especially if you live in a northern climate. But it's also a good book about beekeeping in general even for the experienced beekeeper. Month-by-Month Expert Beekeeping Guidance! Colored Photos!
By Annette M. Silvernale
Beekeeping Mentor in a Book is SUPER helpful! I truly feel Don is walking me through each step, explaining the details of beekeeping clearly and simply, and his book is organized by each month so I can read the night before what I’m supposed to be doing this month then go and do it the next day! Plus his photos are colored so I can actually see what he’s talking about! The other books I’ve read on beekeeping were complicated and hard to use as a new beekeeper, to know what I was supposed to be doing and when. I’ve been reading Beekeeping Mentor in a Book for only two months now, and I’ve gotten more out of it than all of my other beekeeping books combined! I wish I’d had this book when I first started beekeeping!

My sincere thanks to the author for an excellent work.
By mrk
This is a helpful book both in terms of content and organization. I think there is still room for a more practical and concise mentoring book. It would be especially helpful if keepers from different climates and regions wrote similar books.

My sincere thanks to the author for an excellent work.

Cruelty and Laughter: Forgotten Comic Literature and the Unsentimental Eighteenth Century, by Simon Dickie

Eighteenth-century British culture is often seen as polite and sentimental—the creation of an emerging middle class. Simon Dickiedisputes these assumptions in Cruelty and Laughter, a wildly enjoyable but shocking plunge into the forgotten comic literature of the age. Beneath the surface of Enlightenment civility, Dickie uncovers a rich vein ofcruel humorthatforces us to recognize just how slowlyordinary human sufferings became worthy of sympathy.

Delving into an enormous archive of comic novels, jestbooks, farces, variety shows, and cartoons,Dickie findsa vast repository of jokes about cripples, blind men, rape, and wife-beating. Epigrams about syphilis and scurvy sit alongside one-act comedies about hunchbacks in love. He shows us that everyone—rich and poor, women as well as men—laughed along. In the process,Dickie also expands our understanding of many of the century’s major authors, including Samuel Richardson, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Tobias Smollett, Frances Burney, and Jane Austen. He devotes particular attention to Henry Fielding’s Joseph Andrews, a novel that reflects repeatedly on the limits of compassion and the ethical problems of laughter. Cruelty and Laughter is an engaging, far-reaching study of the other side of culture in eighteenth-century Britain.

Review
“This book is a prodigiously erudite reminder that the eighteenth century was not just polite, but vicious. Drawing on jestbooks, verse satires, comic fiction, and a plethora of overlooked sources, Dickie depicts a literary, visual, and physical world replete with cruelty, ribald denigration, and low and bawdy humor. Skillfully combining textual exegesis with a profound knowledge of recent social history, he shows that mockery of the lower orders, beggars, and the poor; jests and japes at the expense of the crippled, deformed, and handicapped; and ribald enthusiasm for sexual violence and rape were part of a cruel social world in which the unprivileged and disadvantaged, even as they sometimes excited compassion and sympathy, were just as likely to excite a disdain that ran the full gamut of verbal and physical violence.”

(John Brewer, California Institute of Technology)

“A pioneering work. Dickie uncovers a rich, long-neglected archive and challenges received wisdom on virtually every page. A joy to read and a revelation.”

(Toni Bowers, University of Pennsylvania)

“With great verve, occasional disgust, and intermittent outrage, Simon Dickie portrays a society of entrenched hierarchies in which entitled aristocrats entertained themselves with cripple dances, libertine young bucks wreaked havoc in both popular fiction and common reality, and the poor and disabled were the inevitable butts of cruel jokes on and off the page. Working against common scholarly assumptions but backed by ample evidence, he argues that delight in the suffering of others was one thing that all classes of eighteenth-century society shared. Throughout he combines the virtues of a historian and a literary critic with a creative and self-conscious awareness of the complex relation of representation to reality. One of the most original, readable, educational, and entertaining books in the field of eighteenth-century studies I have read in the past decade.”

(Helen Deutsch, University of California, Los Angeles)

“This excellent and thoroughly researched book argues clearly that eighteenth-century readers read—and worse, enjoyed laughing at—jokes that we would find in incredibly bad taste; and in that, Dickie sees the key to the persistence of an entire way of thinking that is now lost to us. Bringing a tremendous amount of material to our attention, he takes a provocative stance against what he sees as an idealized image of the eighteenth century and points to numerous avenues for future research. Terrific and important,Cruelty and Laughterwill be of great interest to scholars of eighteenth-century history, literature, popular culture, humor, and the history of the book.”

(John O’Brien, author of Harlequin Britain: Pantomime and Entertainment, 1690–1760 John O'Brien)

“Placing Fielding, the greatest humourist of his time, back amongst his contemporaries and responding to the comedy of his writing as his first readers would have done is a masterly stroke in this scholarly, original and highly readable book.”

(Literary Review)

“The examples [Dickie] presents are convincing—and largely shocking to modern sensibilities.”

(Barnes and Noble Review)

“Dickie unearthed a huge number of 18th-century jest books, poems, bodily dysfunction and rape jokes, ramble novels, and farces—most of them hitherto ignored or neglected—and here offers a valuable and engrossing exploration of them. . . . Highly recommended.”

(Choice)

“Dickie mounts a compelling case against what he calls ‘the politeness-sensibility paradigm,’ by resurrecting a jeering counter-discourse that reveled in human suffering and physical affliction.” (London Review of Books)

“Dickie . . . has done a brilliant job illuminating a dark side to the British psyche some 300 years ago.” (Sun News Corp)

“A brilliant and beautifully written book, Cruelty and Laughter introduces its readers to a world of violent mayhem, both rhetorical and real. . . . Such is the transformative experience of reading this book that I, for one, will never look at the mid-eighteenth century again in quite the same way.” (H-Net Reviews)

“Astonishing. . . . If you think you know the eighteenth century, you will not look at it the same way after reading this book.” (The Dispatch)

“Dickie’s book is energetic and full of perceptive detail, and assembles a great deal of little-known material.” (Claude Rawson Studies in English Literature 1500-1900)

“Dickie wants to study experience, the ‘reality’ behind the jokes, and to this end he complements his literary analysis with social history. He does a masterly job of using shreds of evidence to reconstruct not only a culture of cruel jokes but also the society from which these sprung. . . . Dickie has given us a terrific account of the unsentimental eighteenth century, deepening our understanding of how malicious laughter was an enduring element of British culture.” (Karen Harvey Journal of British Studies)

“This book is a genuinely interesting and important contribution to scholarship. Anyone interested in the comic writers of the eighteenth century will find Cruelty and Laughter worthwhile. Dickie has changed the way we should conceive of eighteenth-century humor and altered our understanding of what readers enjoyed reading. This book makes possible critical reassessments of Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, and others that take into account the reading public’s taste for cruel comedy.” (The Eighteenth-Century Intelligencer)

“Dickie has performed a valuable service by digging deep in eighteenth-century popular (and for that matter high) culture and unearthing forgotten texts and the attitudes they project that prove his point beyond any doubt. His scholarship is thorough, indeed comprehensive, and his book is richly informative. . . . Masterful scholarship. . . . I will never again speak glibly of the Age of Sensibility.” (John Richetti Age of Johnson)

A New View of the Eighteenth Century
By Rob Hardy
If you had lived in mid-eighteenth century England, you would undoubtedly have heard the joke, and probably many times, about that jolly fellow Beau Nash, who had many tales told of him, some of which may even have been true. One day, this particular one goes, in the grove, he joined some ladies, and asked one of them, who had a crooked back, whence she came? "Straight from London," came the reply, whereupon the irrepressible Nash rejoindered, "Indeed, Madam, then you must have been confoundedly warped along the way." The story was told and retold, and printed in jestbooks over and over again because they shamelessly plagiarized each other. It brought great laughter, but a couple of centuries later, we are likely to be embarrassed by the callousness of the joke; one does not make fun of hunchbacks. Not only that, but we have the impression that eighteenth century British society had refined manners, polite interpersonal dealings, and Christian concern for all. Not a bit of it, if you look at the jokes and stories recalled in _Cruelty & Laughter: Forgotten Comic Literature and the Unsentimental Eighteenth Century_ (University of Chicago Press) by professor of English Simon Dickie. It was not just those with crooked backs that were the butts of jokes. The distasteful subjects of humor Dickie catalogues include amputees, blind people, rape victims, the indigent, dwarves, the deaf, squinters, stammerers, Welshmen, and many more. Dickie's astonishing work looks at the profuse books of jokes, the forgotten novels, and even the trial records of the age, and finds that the comparative politeness we find, say, in the novels of Jane Austen seems a completely different world. "This was not a polite world," writes Dickie, "but `an impolite world that talked much about politeness.'" The book is an eye-opener.

The lack of politeness, and even more, the aggressive and cruel humor, we might think were restricted to the lower classes, but the jestbooks quoted here were relatively expensive texts. They were often put out by the same printers who published classics, sacred literature, or sentimental novels. There were "deformity comedies," plays with a plot founded on the wooden leg, dwarfism, or hunched back of the main character. Within comedies, or used as an intermission entertainment, could be seen "crutch dances," in which humpbacks and amputees danced around, or "elephant capers" of a grossly fat dancer. It was fun to tell an old woman that sixpence had been dropped in a puddle and watch her go after the nonexistent coin. Summoning a midwife for a lady who had no need of one was quite the giggle. Among the most unpleasant founts of humor here are jokes having to do with rape. "Rape jokes are everywhere one looks: in cheap pamphlets and song sheets as well as more literary texts. The same dirty jokes show up in ballad operas and then again as asides in otherwise morbid tragedies. As they migrate across genres, these jokes take every possible form; the only constant, in fact, is that the woman is always lying." There were jokes about how rape trials were conducted, but Dickie has found from actual transcripts that there was levity in the courtroom, and appreciative laughter, for a crime that easily leant itself to guffaws. A witness for the defendant in an Old Bailey proceeding, for instance, was on the stand so that he could insult the woman who had brought charges. "She is a very vile girl," he testified. "I have seen a young man upon her with his breeches down, and her cloaths up, and another man lie by the side of her in a stable. I have laid with her a great many times myself." It is not surprising that rape cases were seldom brought to court, and once there, seldom were decided in the victim's favor.

There is a fine chapter here on the jokes and pranks undergone by the longsuffering Parson Adams in Henry Fielding's _Joseph Andrews_, showing how Fielding was to use familiar anti-cleric humor. Dickie has also surveyed far less important or familiar novels of the period ("shameless rubbish") that he seems, in some instances, to have enjoyed. This is one of the liveliest of academic books because of the nature of the subject. Dickie gives plenty of examples of humor, and a reader can enjoy laughing at the ones of lesser cruelty, and can enjoy astonishment that the crueler jokes were ever considered funny. If you think you know the eighteenth century, you will not look at it the same way after reading this book.

My painting frenzy
By B. Smith
I bought this book as part of my efforts to learn Dewberry's methods. It has numerous tempting projects, clearly written instructions, and an understanding of its audience's needs. Dewberry's method is the easiest I've ever tried, and the results are outstanding with just a little practice and concentration. I am very grateful to Donna for introducing the world to her painting techniques and I look forward to more books like this one. I have more projects lined up now than I'll be able to finish in a year, but I'm sure I'll complete them and be gratified with the results.
