Sadhana, a prayer primer
By Karen O'Malia
"Sadhana" is an excellent book that I have personally owned for years. I continue to use it in my ministry, although you don't have to be a pastor to use it, to teach people how to do centering and contemplative prayer. This prayer has life-changing effects on a person's life. Anthony De Mello really understood how to share information in a way that all people could understand and use.

The origins of a great spiritual writer
By J. P. Reynolds
This is DeMello’s first book and, as such, is his most “traditional” book. This book serves well as a companion to the Spiritual Exercises. I think it is a great guide to have if you are a retreat director. If you're not familiar with DeMello’s later works or if you’re beginning to enter into a practice of meditation, I suggest you start with “Taking Flight” as it’s more accessible.

"Keynotes in Organic Chemistry" is an excellent revision course for basic concepts in organic chemistry. It is very suitable for self study, with good questions, and answers provided. Momoko Kuroda (b. 1938) is a remarkable haiku spirit and a powerfully independent Japanese woman. The one hundred poems here—her first collection in English—show her evolution as a poet, her acute lyricism, and her engagement as a writer in issues central to modern Japan: postwar identity, nuclear politics, and Fukushima. Abigail Friedman's introduction and textual commentaries provide important background and superb insight into poetic themes and craft.

I wait for fireflies / I wait as if for someone / who will never return

Momoko Kuroda is one of Japan's most well-known haiku poets.

Abigail Friedman lives near Washington, DC, and is author of The Haiku Apprentice.

About the Author
Momoko Kuroda (b. 1938 in Tochigi Prefecture) is one of the most highly-respected haiku poets in Japan today. She has published five collections of haiku, and authored or co-authored another 22 prose works including essays, season- word compendiums, books on haiku for beginners, and a two-volume set of interviews with notable Showa-era poets. Her first haiku collection earned her the Modern Haiku Women award and the Haiku Association New Poet award. In 2011 she was awarded the Dakotsu prize, Japan’s most prestigious haiku award. She is a haiku selector for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s weekly Sunday haiku column, and a frequent haiku selector for NHK television. She is on the jury of several national and regional haiku contests, including the annual Mainichi Shimbun haiku award. In 1990, she founded her own haiku organization, AOI, with a nationwide membership of several thousand. All this she accomplished while working full-time at Hakuhodo, a Tokyo-based advertising firm, until her retirement at age 60.

Abigail Friedman, a retired diplomat and accomplished, award-winning haiku poet, began composing haiku in a haiku group that met at the foot of Mt. Fuji, led by Japanese haiku master Momoko Kuroda. Her book, The Haiku Apprentice: Memoirs of Writing Poetry in Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 2006), captures that experience and her insights into haiku. She is founder of HaikuQuebec, the first French/English bilingual haiku group in Quebec City. Her work has appeared in poetry publications in the U.S., Canada, France, and Japan, including: Frogpond; AOI; The Asahi Weekly; Association Francophone de Haiku (AFH); The Moss at Tokeiji (Deep North Press, 2010); ; and Bilboquet. She has presented her haiku at the Montreal Zen Poetry Festival, the Festival international de la poesie de Trois-Rivieres, Haiku Canada, and Haiku North America. In 2012, she was commissioned to compose a haiku to mark the U.S. gift of dogwoods to Japan, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to the U.S. Awards and Other Honors: First Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2014); Second Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2012); Grand Prize, Yamanashi Mt. Fuji haiku contest (2011); Honorable Mention, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2008); Finalist, Kiriyama Book Prize [for The Haiku Apprentice] (2007); Second Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2006).

Day Moon
By M. E. Bessette
Its polished layout style makes this a pretty little book. And if your
interest is in knowing about the life of Momoko Kuroda this book offers glimpses through the eyes of a friend.

But if your interest is to understand the way Kuroda writes haiku you will need to explore other translations of her verses. At least some of the verses in this book are not true to the poet's actual meaning. They have been rearranged, the kireji (cutting word) misplaced or changed, and suffused with substituted words when succinct words are available.

Fortunately, Friedman reveals a more literal translation of one of the selected verses in her commentary on the flycatcher verse [pg. 110], but the verse falls close to the end of the book, leaving the reader wondering about all that came before.

The final section shows modern-day haiku as it morphs into personal introspection with its increased frequency of the self as subject matter. With this shift the natural world seems to lose its power as the broad allegory for the cycles of human existence -- a faintly visible waning day moon.

A Resonant Life-Journey in Haiku
By Story Circle Book Reviews
We think we know haiku. It's the short-short form of poetry based on seventeen syllables in a 5/7/5 line length, usually an observation of nature. It's poetry of the moment, dashed off quickly, not serious writing.

Wrong. Haiku is so much more—which is only one of the surprises in this beautiful small volume of haiku from one of Japan's most renowned poets, Momoko Kuroda, translated with insightful commentary by Abigail Friedman, a career U.S. diplomat who studied with Kuroda when Friedman lived in Japan.

Like the haiku it centers on, I Wait for the Moon cannot be summed up in simple terms. The hundred poems Friedman chooses take readers on a journey through life, writing, Japan, and the evolution of one woman's resonant writing voice.

Haiku, it turns out, are limited to 17 units, not syllables: the units are 17 sounds of Japanese Kanji, the pictorial letterforms. The line lengths are not a prescribed 5/7/5; rather they are signaled by grammatical breaks or kireji, the word that signals a "cut" or turn, a surprise in the haiku.

The point of delving into haiku form is not to mess with reader's heads, but to show the intricacy in those seventeen beats, details that make this form of poetry far more challenging and meaningful than most people realize.

Take this early Kuroda haiku:

"underground passage/ there's a wind rushing by—/ the calendar seller"

Simply a powerful observation of a moment, it seems, until Friedman comments:

"As is so often the case with haiku, it is the unstated which completes the poem. We must divine the sound of calendar pages fluttering and flapping in the wind, drawing Momoko's attention to the calendar stall. Here, everything is in motion—the poet walking through the passageway, the wind, the pages of the calendars, and time itself (the calendar being a symbol of tempus fugit)."

Friedman shows Kuroda's decades-long evolution from a classical poet of haiku, based on reporting or observation, to a poet whose haiku are deeply reflective. The changes in the poet's writing voice were sharpened by the events of March 11, 2011, when the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan struck the country's northern coast, followed by a devastating tsunami and the man-made devastation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant went into meltdown.

"deep beneath the sea/ upon those in deepest sleep/ cherry blossoms fall"

Friedman writes:

Momoko believes the triple disaster changed not only the lives of the victims, but everyone's lives. She felt that she needed to achieve a 'self-revolution.' She set about contributing to the revival and rebuilding effort through her role as a haiku selector [she was asked to encourage locals to write haiku about the events]. ... Momoko urged contributors to write about their painful experiences. (Specifying such a request was particularly necessary as the cultural norm in Japan would be for victims to try not to burden others with their pain.) She embraced the idea that haiku did not have to be about the blessings of nature. She confessed regret and shame at having failed to heed early critics of nuclear power, and she took a public stand along with other artists against nuclear power. Looking back, Momoko believes that the events of March 11, 2011, forced a transformation within her, altering her perspective on life and nature, as well as haiku.

"the early rising bamboo partridge calls to those no longer alive"

I Wait for the Moon is haiku at its richest, an exploration of life and our lives through the voice of a justifiably revered poet and her insightful student. The book itself honors the poetic form; it is carefully crafted and beautiful in its details, inviting readers to savor the words—and wisdom within.

an excellent presentation of haiku and the translations thereof
By M. Passaglia
As usual, an excellent presentation of haiku and the translations thereof. Ms. Friedman has spent many years in Japan and has been an assiduous student of the literary form. She is also fluent in Japanese both reading and writing the language.

Fantastic Fantasy Gaming. Highly recommended.
By Robert
First rate guide to using the Hero System to run Fantasy campaigns. Michael Surbrook brings his usual in depth attention to detail to the elements of fantasy campaign and adventure design, and the Hero System lends itself beautifully to settings from grim Sword & Sorcery to epic High Fantasy.

The book includes a complete rules set along side sample monsters, characters, spells, loot, adventure seeds, etc. Old school style, with one book, a few fistfuls of six sided dice, and some paper and pencils, you can start playing. There are also a long list of other Hero System books to draw on as you build your campaign.

FHC uses the 6th edition Hero System rules, but is fully backwards compatible with earlier editions. You can find years of gaming between these covers. Highly recommended.

A contender for best single-volume RPG on the market today
By Jason Packer
All of the rules from Hero System 6th edition, condensed into a tome 1/4 the size. Yes, you sacrifice many of the examples and rare corner-case options for some of the powers, but in exchange you get a book focused on the Fantasy genre, but flexible enough to play any kind of game you might want. A contender for best single-volume RPG on the market today.

Humility Is the New Smart: Rethinking Human Excellence in the Smart Machine Age, by Edward D. Hess, Katherine Ludwig

Humility Is the New Smart

Your job is at risk—if not now, then soon. We are on the leading edge of a Smart Machine Age led by artificial intelligence that will be as transformative for us as the Industrial Revolution was for our ancestors. Smart machines will take over millions of jobs in manufacturing, office work, the service sector, the professions, you name it. Not only can they know more data and analyze it faster than any mere human, say Edward Hess and Katherine Ludwig, but smart machines are free of the emotional, psychological, and cultural baggage that so often mars human thinking.

So we can't beat 'em and we can't join 'em. To stay relevant, we have to play a different game. Hess and Ludwig offer us that game plan. We need to excel at critical, creative, and innovative thinking and at genuinely engaging with others—things machines can't do well. The key is to change our definition of what it means to be smart. Hess and Ludwig call it being NewSmart. In this extraordinarily timely book, they offer detailed guidance for developing NewSmart attitudes and four critical behaviors that will help us adapt to the new reality.

The crucial mindset underlying NewSmart is humility—not self-effacement but an accurate self-appraisal: acknowledging you can't have all the answers, remaining open to new ideas, and committing yourself to lifelong learning. Drawing on extensive multidisciplinary research, Hess and Ludwig emphasize that the key to success in this new era is not to be more like the machines but to excel at the best of what makes us human.

Review
“I loved this book. Drawing from research on human cognition, the authors explain why all of us are ill-equipped to cope with the coming smart machine age. And they offer a path forward in the form of five NewSmart principles, which are profound and powerful. This is a book about new thinking—the kind of generous, curious thinking that will allow us to thrive in a world in which machines do so many things better than we ever will.”
—Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School, and coauthorof Building the Future

“This book has a very important message: new forms of relationships and a more humane attitude toward each other will become essential ingredients of a new way of being. Humility, more personal relationships, and collaboration will no longer be options but the key to health, productivity, and a sense of well being.”
—Edgar H. Schein, Professor Emeritus, MIT Sloan School of Management, and author of Helping, Humble Inquiry, and Humble Consulting

“Machines will soon be smarter than we are and do most of our jobs. Hess and Ludwig provide valuable insights into the roles that humans will play and how we can adapt to the new realities. The values they prescribe are so uplifting for humanity that I wonder why we can't start now; why do the machines need to evolve before we do?”
—Vivek Wadhwa, Distinguished Fellow and Professor, Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley

“Humility Is the New Smart challenges everything we think we know about a ‘good' education. Today, inthe Smart Machine Age,it's no longer about how much you know but how you know—the questions you ask—and how you interact with others. A fascinating and challenging book for all educators.”
—Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap and Creating Innovators

“Fascinating and perceptive, Humility Is the New Smart is an excellent book for leaders and everyone who wants to remain employed in the Smart Machine Age.”
—Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers50 #1 Leadership Thinker in the World

“The forces of the Smart Machine Age are already upon us, and like time and tide they cannot be held back.Hess and Ludwig are out front with this insightful, practical, and compelling guide to navigating, transforming, and leading organizations for this new age in which the nature of work and the workforce will be dramatically different.”
—Admiral Gary Roughead, US Navy (Retired), former Chief of Naval Operations

“As a venture capitalist, I have a front-row seat to the way advances in robotics, sensors, and artificial intelligence are changing the way we work—and it's happening faster than you think. Once again, Ed Hess is out front in his research—this time on the skills and behaviors that will determine whether people and organizations succeed or fail as they adapt to the new reality of working side by side with machines. From CEOs to students, thus is a must-read.”
—Frank H. Foster, Managing Director, Frontier Venture Capital

“This book was a revelation to me. Who knew that the secret to survival in this intimidating new world of machine intelligence was for us to become more human? In both our business and our private lives, we can choose fear and ego and retreat into ourselves in the face of these challenges, or we can embrace collaboration and positivity instead. Hess and Ludwig show us how to make the life-affirming choice.”
—Jeanne Liedtka, coauthor of Designing for Growth and Solving Problems with Design Thinking

“An insightful, practical, enriching book for individuals and organizational leaders. NewSmart can be a key to unlocking immense organizational value, one human interaction at a time.”
—Sean Ryan, Senior Vice President, McGraw-Hill Education

“This book makes the compelling case that true competitive advantage requires human excellence. If you want to be an agile, adaptive, and enabling leader, this book is a must-read.”
—Marvin Riley, President, Fairbanks Morse Engine

“Original and counterintuitive, Humility Is the New Smart is essential reading for all who would prepare for the great transformation of employment and work that lies ahead.”
—Rashmi Prasad, Dean, College of Business and Public Policy, University of Alaska Anchorage

“This compelling book is about how we can succeed in the age of AI—by excelling at what differentiates us as humans. Leaders will have to be good at ‘not knowing,' quieting their ego and mastering their fears of looking bad and making mistakes. Instead of managing others, leaders will have to manage themselves to enable others.”
—Peter Rodriguez, Dean, Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University

“Hess and Ludwig offer revolutionary approaches to self-management along with innovative and insightful leadership platforms for the Smart Machine Age. A powerful book!”
—Jeanette K. Winters, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer, Igloo Products Corporation

“How must our notions about individual and organizational excellence adapt to the Smart Machine Age? Hess and Ludwig offer insights that are perceptive, provocative, and powerful! Their ideas can help your organization and you adapt to the coming transformations spurred by big data, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and automation.”
—Robert F. Bruner, University Professor, University of Virginia

“Humility Is the New Smart is a must-read for business and political leaders, parents, teachers, and everyone interested in understanding the challenges and opportunities of the coming Smart Machine Age. The explanation of humility—its philosophical meaning and application to leadership—is the best I've ever read.”
—Fernando Merc, President, Latin America and Caribbean, Nestl Purina

“Hess and Ludwig crush it in Humility Is the New Smart. They introduce the compelling concept of NewSmart, which will help learners successfully navigate the coming Smart Machine Age. They want our young people to be adaptive lifelong learners, and embracing NewSmart is a path to learning for the future, not our past.”
—Dr. Pamela R. Moran, Superintendent, Albemarle County Public Schools, Virginia

“This fascinating examination of what it will take to thrive in the Smart Machine Age offers a compelling and profoundly humane manual on how to achieve our highest expressions of excellence, in business and in all our interactions.”
—Ming-Jer Chen, former President, Academy of Management, and Professor, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia

“Humility Is the New Smart provides a provocative view of the kinds of individual skills necessary to succeed in the future. Through their exhaustive interdisciplinary research, the authors give us practical advice on how we can best prepare ourselves to excel in the Smart Machine Age."
—Wally Walker, founder of Hana Road Capital and former CEO, Seattle Supersonics

“As a father and the leader of a school responsible for preparing students for their future, I embraced the authors' premise that we need to change our mindsets, skills, and behaviors for a more dynamic technology-based world. They provide compelling research and very practical tools to help us on our journey. Listen well—our futures and our children's futures depend on it.”
—G. Thomas Battle, Jr., Headmaster, Virginia Episcopal School

“I was incredibly impressed with how this book blends the importance of self-management and self-awareness with the reality of the new-age technology that will shape the way business is done in the future.”
—Sam Presti, General Manager, Oklahoma City Thunder

“Outstanding book with rock-solid arguments about why doing a ‘good job' will no longer be good enough in a smart machine world and how NewSmart beliefs and behaviors can help humankind master this challenge.”
—Kurt D. Bettenhausen, Chair, Digital Transformation Group, VDI, Germany

Subject on-target - look forward to more
By Dimitri Darras
I'm glad the authors tackled this subject which seems to be trending in current business and organizational literature. If feel that they entered risky, unsafe territory which is refreshing for business writing. In many ways the thesis (compassion, listening, and humility) seems obvious but it isn't. Pay needs to be tethered to NOT being an a-hole because being one leads to losses for everyone in the end. Take a look around at the current surreal economy and global leadership - does it look like Boomer-style management is working well? By objective measures (equities) yes, others (political, socioeconomic) no. I disagree with the authors on AI and am an optimist on this front. Machines will never replace most people's jobs despite being being anthropomorphized and demonized by popular culture. There are some areas in which machines will never excel at - and I don't mean human emotion - basic connections that a primate could master. My thinking is based on two decades of working-hands on with them. Show me a sentient system and I'll eat my hat. After all, AI is designed by humans and thus intrinsically flawed.

Thumbs up for guaranteed minimum wage if that's what it takes for people to live with dignity. However, I refuse to believe that workers replaced by automation can't learn something new to do (Amazon Mechanical Turk, for instance. civic volunteering, town and county beautification, counseling, EMT services, kid's entertainment - you get the idea).

The section on mindfulness lost me because I cannot ever seem to attain it and end up with counter-productive results even. While it's intrinsically sound, the groundswell around it is just plain annoying. Try just being decent or getting something concrete done well. Maybe that's my definition of mindfulness.

I felt that the section on Bridgewater was not critical enough - many journalists have suggested that their techniques are bizarre and distressing (skinny dipping anyone? NYT article- read it). Despite being effective and fascinating to the public, something doesn't ring quiet right about their operation, as lucrative as it is. If the reports about their metrics-obsessed culture are true, it conjures up a laughable image. Better to be broke under a yoke. For full disclosure, I applied for an IT job there during the recession - professional and thoughtful rejection letter ;) - so I need to have a 360-degree perspective too.

I think a modified version of the Bridgewater model (the so-called "principals") could lead to a more honest workplace - a rarity in today's day-and-age. If you read the Principals, there is truth and sincerity in the anecdotes and psychological insights. In closing, I'm doubtful that a set of exercises and case studies will give all employees critical thinking skills and being able to clearly articulate in art or writing one's purpose in life. On the other hand, I waited months for this book and the authors volunteered personal stories and ideas that got my brain thinking creatively, even if I didn't agree with entirely agree with them. Good books spark discussion and dissent not blind adherence.

Get ready for the SMA by being a better human
By Adam Hansen
The approach that the authors advocate here is a better, more humane way to go about business, even if Smart Machines weren't coming. Given that they are, there are few paths forward that make more sense than what we have here.

As I read the book, it struck me that emotional intelligence, in being branded as its own kind of intelligence, is perhaps being done a disservice, and I believe we're seeing ample evidence of intelligence stripped of emotional intelligence coming off as dumb as gypsum. We undoubtedly need some renegotiation of the language and hierarchy between garden-variety intelligence and emotional intelligence. Old smart really is the new dumb.

Read the book so that you can reflect and then start to read it again. I am concerned that we are not nearly ready enough for the Smart Machine Age. But we can be.

Excellent read and analysis
By Josh
I purchased copies for myself and everyone within my management team along with several friends. The authors are on the forefront of a coming revolution we have been hearing about. This book is a standout and explores ideas and territories that I have not previously seen covered. It is thoughtful, thought provoking, and will cause you to really think about the ramifications for the future. The book is a fast read and the analysis is spot on. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

C++ Standard Library Quick Reference, by Peter Van Weert, Marc Gregoire

This quick reference is a condensed guide to the essential data structures, algorithms, and functions provided by the C++ Standard Library. Used by millions of C++ programmers on a daily basis, the C++ Standard Library features core classes for strings, I/O streams, and various generic containers, as well as a comprehensive set of algorithms to manipulate them. In recent years, the C++11 and C++14 standards have added even more efficient container classes, a new powerful regular expression library, and a portable multithreading library featuring threads, mutexes, condition variables, and atomic variables.
Needless to say, it is hard to know and remember all the possibilities, details, and intricacies of this vast and growing library. This handy reference guide is therefore indispensable to any C++ programmer. It offers a condensed, well-structured summary of all essential aspects of the C++ Standard Library. No page-long, repetitive examples or obscure, rarely used features. Instead, everything you need to know and watch out for in practice is outlined in a compact, to-the-point style, interspersed with practical tips and well-chosen, clarifying examples. The book does not explain the C++ language or syntax, but is accessible to anyone with basic C++ knowledge or programming experience. Even the most experienced C++ programmer though will learn a thing or two from it and find it a useful memory-aid. Among the topics covered are:
What You Will Learn

  • Gain the essentials that the C++ Standard Library has to offer
  • Use containers to efficiently store and retrieve your data
  • Use algorithms to inspect and manipulate your data
  • See how lambda expressions allow for elegant use of algorithms
  • Discover what the standard string class provides and how to use it
  • Write localized applications
  • Work with file and stream-based I/O
  • Discover what smart pointers are and how to use them to prevent memory leaks
  • Write safe and efficient multi-threaded code using the threading libraries
Who This Book Is For
All C++ programmers: irrespective of their proficiency with the language or the Standard Library, this book offers an indispensable reference and memory-aid.

A secondary audience is developers who are new to C++, but not new to programming, and who want to learn more on the C++ Standard Library in a quick, condensed manner.

Good quick C++14 STL reference
By Ricardo Machado
This book delivers on its promises. It's a well written book that gives a high level view of C++14 STL with concise descriptions of the items covered. In my opinion, this is not a book for the beginner or someone trying to learn C++ and STL, but is very useful quick reference for C++ programmers on some part of the library they have forgotten or in need of a quick refresh. In a lot of situations when I find an interesting item I am not completely familiar, I quickly read the short description and then search for complete descriptions on C++ online documentation. As mentioned by the introductory chapter, not all aspects of C++14 STL are covered or discussed in detail.

By Fedor Moiseev
C++ changed a lot in recent years and its evolutions continues. Standard library is the most significant part reflecting this evolution. It changed a lot, getting new features, changing existing getting rid of several. Now being a reflecting of long term experience it represents and defines the way we are programming in modern C++.
I find this book being a really nice explanation of what the Standard Library is now and thus to the actual version of the language, C++ 14. Shortly representing obvious things, it doesn't forget about nuances and popular mistakes discussing them in easily findable boxed notices.
I fully agree with what is said in the introduction of the book: "Even the most experienced C++ programmer will learn a thing or two from the book and find it an indispensable reference and memory aid". It helped me to get understanding of few Standard Library features and will stay in easy access as an essential reference.
I hope there will be updated version of the book reflecting arriving C++ 17 and upcoming versions.
