Excellent resource. Recommend it to anyone learning Thai! Made learning fun, manageable and memorable.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even thinking of learning the Thai script. The format of the book and the way the content is divided into manageable chapters will certainly convince even those who are not confident about learning the script. Having used this book I now feel very confident about reading Thai in my everyday life. For some reason I decided to learn how to read before really learning how to speak and it has helped me to grasp the proper pronunciation of new words as they should actually be pronounced. I had looked into a few other resources for learning to read Thai, and nothing came close to this. It is very user-friendly, informative, engaging and with plenty of personality shining through. Read it and you’ll see what I mean. I was particularly pleased with how the book deals with the irregularities of the script and left me feeling that I had a good grasp of them on top of the basics. As with anything worth learning, a bit of effort is required, but Read Thai in 10 Days clearly sets out and explains everything and makes the experience fun. Finally, and importantly for a learner, I felt that I had achieved something new and removed a bit more of the confusion that I’d gathered trying to learn on my own, after each of the 10 days (the 10 chapters). Because of this, I was encouraged by a clearly knowledgeable author to take up the next day’s lesson and it’s certainly paid off.

Highly recommended!

When I decided to learn Thai, I thought it would be best to learn to read first so I would not have to rely on transliteration. I'm so happy that I found Bingo Lingo! It took me about 6 weeks to get through the 10 lessons and feel confident in my reading. The way the lessons are laid out makes learning easy and enjoyable. Now I am able to study vocabulary using Thai script and I am picking up words at an amazing pace.

The right tool for the job

This book does not teach you the characters by the names of the characters, but instead has you memorize the characters and organizing them in a pattern that allows you to tackle the tone system. This is actually an efficient way to tackle the problem of these characters with their duplicates. The text dishes out the information in 10 pages or less, but the book is so content rich that you will have to spend around 3 hours to make the 10 day deadline. Honestly, I took it more slowly over a month, and I found the experience quite pleasant. After learning the consonants and how they function, I started learning the names and I was starting to build my vocabulary. However, you are going to have to make mental images and play around with the consonants to make them stick, but if you're able to do that slightly, there shouldn't be a problem. This book is a great way to tackle Thai in its early stages; if you're the kind of person that wants some ground rules to build off of, this book is for you.

very basic...mediocre examples.

The fundamental principles in this book are sound. This book would be good for somebody who is new to the idea of design sketching. I wish they had provided better examples as inspiration. Many of the design projects are shallow student quality work. It will not provide much for professionals trying to hone their craft.

Eastern storytelling, universal lesson.

How do you convey in a book something that doesn't adhere to typical containers of meaning? The difference between the performances of master musician and beginner is not easily notated. There is no economy of words sufficient to capture the experience of a non-adjacent sensory/cognitive process that flows in the moment.

The best remedy is concomitance with a master, but the book can not put the reader in the room with the master. What about a story of the master coming to the room of a hero-reader? Getting warmer, but still there is the problem of describing what happens.

This book is a beautiful attempt at solving this puzzle. Like many critical reviewers, I also had trouble with this book. I opened my heart one click wider and it all came flooding in. I cried real hard when I finally understood, and the new level of acuity changed my life profoundly.

Interesting read - a must for musicians, new and old

The value of this book really depends on how much Victor Wooten you've watched/how many interviews you've listened to. If you're a pretty seasoned Victor Wooten follower, then a lot of the material discussed here is going to be redundant to you. There are a few things written in the book that I haven't seen elsewhere (and just like everything else Vic says, it's genius), but most of it can be found in the form of YouTube clips.

The book itself reads okay. It's a bit cheesy, but I think Victor wanted it to to be a little hokey - after all, he could've very easily written this as a formal, rigid instruction book, and he chose to go the "fable" route instead. The cheesiness can make it a bit difficult to get through at times (cue the eyeroll), but the messages hidden within the cheese are extremely valuable.

Overall, I'm glad I bought and read the book, and would definitely recommend it to any musician looking to expand their horizon and break into that next level of playing.

This is a very basic book written in very simple language. This is not an aspiring work of literature. Due to its simplicity the book might be dismissed by many but I think it has some really good ideas. These very important ideas are often taken for granted, ignored and even forgotten. Not all books on the subject have to be academic, dry and resemble an instructor's manual. Music is not only about doing. However, what I missed from the book is a sense of development, a narrative. I wish the story in the book actually led somewhere, if it is intended to be a piece of fiction (which it is). The book doesn't lack ideas but it falls short on continuity. It gradually becomes monotonous and the reader's interest fades away.

Clearly targeted to a very specific audience

This is not what I was looking for. This is a book for young Americans, Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis planning to do a Gap Year. It is targeted to young people who do not have much experience traveling independently. Much of the information is useful to the nationalities above, but not to people from other countries. If you have already traveled internationally on your own then I don't think the book will be of much use. I am planning a round-the-world trip and I thought the book will focus more on specific topics related to long-term travel (getting visas as you travel, detailed country-by-country travel costs, safety, health and risks specific to certain regions, etc.). Lonely Planet have done a good job here but I have found little information in this book that I hadn't found either on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree forum or in travel websites such as Wikitravel.

So, buy this book if you are 18-19 and about to take a Gap Year or about to travel internationally on your own for the first time (and if you come from the UK or its offshoots). Otherwise perhaps you should look elsewhere.
Much of the book is devoted to really basic travel information that's readily available elsewhere. In contrast, there is not much in the way of travel advice for long-term travelers are scarce. I love Lonely Planet and am an avid consumer of their products, but this is by far the least useful LP book that I've bought. But some of the people who commented on this review have found this book very useful so it depends on your demographics.

About the Author
Carol Dahl is currently a professor of Mineral Economics and director of the CSM/IFP Joint International Degree Program in Petroleum Economics and Management, in the Division of Economics and Business at the Colorado School of Mines. She received her BA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin and her PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota. Dahl has supervised numerous PhD students, published articles, and traveled to more than 80 countries pursuing her interests in modeling international energy markets. She is a senior fellow and council member of the American Association for Energy Economics, as well as a member of the International Association for Energy Economics and the Editorial Board for The Energy Journal.

Excellent examples, great for use in an energy economics or business class

I was TA for a class, Energy Economics (ENNEC 484W), during the Fall 2006 semester at Penn State University. The professor for the class introduced Dahl's book into the class's curriculum during the Fall semester of 2005. The class covered the first 8 chapters of Dahl's book which included economic topics on perfect competition (explanation of supply and demand), natural monopoly, deregulation, dominant firm model, market structures, and externalities. Each of these economic concepts are fully developed using an example from energy markets. The examples are agreeably the most fitting for each subject. She discusses the deregulation of the electricity market for deregulation, coal markets for perfect competition, and OPEC for the dominant firm chapter. Each chapter is developed with clearly derived numerical examples and useful charts that develop an intuitive understanding of the amount of natural gas, petroleum, coal, etc. reserves in the world and their geographical distribution. I recommend this book for any class that deals with any aspect of energy markets. Since our class was rooted more in the economic theory of energy markets, we were able to use the first half of the text, in addition to extra material such as journal articles, to satisfy our objectives. All of the students in the class gave the book great reviews saying that it was the perfect aid to understanding lecture.

Good for Graduate and Beyond, NOT Undergrad.

The book was purchased for a 3-level Energy Economics course at a highly respected private college. Has some useful background information and charts, but overall, is geared more for graduate students, academics, and mostly for business owners who are already decently versed in medium to upper-level economic concepts. Tends to be dry and can be even dull at points. 3/5 for my purposes, i can see it being 4/5 for upper levels.

Useful, but only if some previuous background

The book contains an economics approach to international energy markets. It does provide some background into energy issues in order to explain the functioning of the markets using economic models. As a result, it is mainly useful from an academic perspective. It is not an introductory book. In order to go through it you need background both in economics and energy.

About the Author
Maurizio Calbi is Professor of English Literature at the University of Salerno, Italy. He is the author of Approximate Bodies: Gender and Power in Early Modern Drama and Anatomy and has published on Shakespeare and early modern culture, screen adaptations, postcolonial literature, and postcolonial rewritings of Shakespeare.

An instant classic! The two blurbs say it all

I have little to add to the two super positive and highly informative blurbs by Mark Thornton Burnett and Douglas Lanier except to say that I think this book should be of interest to all Shakespeareans. I will adopt it as a textbook in my courses. I do hope it comes out in paperback. it would be wonderful to teach a course on Shakespeare's media ghosts, using Calbi's book, Kahan's Shakespiritualism: Shakespeare and the Occult, 1850-1950, and Burt and Yates' What's the Worst Thing You Can Do to Shakespeare?? Palgrave is building quite a splendid list.
