HELEN AZAR is a librarian at the Free Library of Philadelphia who helps run a popular local history program. Trained as a scientist, she has worked at the Rare Book Foundation at the Museum of Tsarskoe Selo, Russia, and has published several articles on the identification of the remains of the last Tsar and his family.

Great for Teachers working on the subject share with your students

The book is the first of its kind, because it consists of the authentic diary entries of one of the daughters of the last Russian Tsar. In addition, it is not an indiscriminate repetitive collection of diary entries, but a collection of what looks like carefully chosen representative ones. Some of the entries have been published in Russian (never in English as far as I know), but many of the diary entries I am seeing here for the first time… As a bonus, the book does not only contain Olga’s diaries, but also some other valuable primary sources, including never before published (in English) diary entries of Tsar Nicholas II himself, as well as the memoirs of Alexander Kerensky, and the events seen from their points of view. These, and others, make this book an important resource for WWI and Russian revolution scholars and history buffs too. If you are looking for primary source material of this period, this book is definitely for you.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Beautiful illustrations and a tedious rhyming text add up to disappointment in this counting book. Hulme uses eight-line singsong rhymes to show sea creatures on each double-page spread. Simple examples of addition and subtraction are introduced, and the equation is shown at the bottom of the page. For example, "A stingray digs two sandy clams,/Down on the ocean floor./Then plows around until it finds/ One...two...three...four more./It chews three clams for breakfast/And crunches three for brunch-/So all the clams are gobbled up/And none are left for lunch." At the bottom of the page is the equation: 2 clams + 4 clams - 3 clams - 3 clams = 0 clams. The illustrations of marine life are softly hued; children will enjoy looking at them. There is a description of the animals in the back of the book, but the mathematical concepts are never discussed or explained. There is a great demand for beginning math books, but Sea Sums will only be useful to adults who are willing to spend a lot of time getting young listeners ready for these concepts.

For example, one spread states, "One lionfish is bristling / With pointed, poison spines; / Two others flutter from a cove / Like feathered porcupines. / Around their faces, frilly fins / Spread like a lion's mane. / When one swims off to find some food, / Two fluffy fish remain. 1 lionfish + 2 lionfish -1 lionfish = 2 lionfish." The illustration on the left-hand page shows all three fish swimming; on the right side, two fish remain, and the other is barely visible as it swims out of sight. Wonderful rhymes paired with exciting illustrations

This is one of my favorite books to read to my children. The rhyming text makes it lyrical to read, while my eye easily wanders over the illustrations, while reading it for the umpteenth time. I recommend it unreservedly, as well as its companion, SEA SQUARES, by the same pair.

Mutual Funds for Dummies

I just retired and life has been a whirlwind. I know it;s late to start the investment game and the banks are paying next to nothing on what little money I have. But it is time to make a move and enjoy what so many other brave people have done. I was terrified of loosing what little money I have my cousin gave me the push I needed to get started. He suggested this book and I am so grateful he did. Investing is such a scary thing in todays economy and this book gave me the information I needed to begin playing the game. Mutual Funds for Dummies calmed the fears and was an invaluable took in choosing between minimal and middle of the road risk accounts. I feel confident in my investments and have been watching the money grow over the past week! I'm sure there will be bumps in the road for my investments but so far the accounts I invested in are making profits much more significant than a bank. At the rate my money is compounding I;m sure I can weather a financial storm and still be ahead of the local banks offerings. I wouldn't have made the conservative investments without the information in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels apprehensive about investing outside of their local bank or for beginners of any age.

Great information for anyone who has a 401(k) or an interest in investing!

I originally checked out an older edition of this book from my local library and found it to be extremely helpful. I decided to purchase the latest edition, which covers the 2008 financial crisis.

I have worked for 10 years as a 401(k) plan administrator, so I have a decent base knowledge of mutual funds as they relate to retirement plans. I wanted to rollover an old 401(k) account into and IRA and used this book to gather information about the process, fund types and mutual fund companies.

Even though I have some background on the subject, I found a lot of very useful information inside and believe that the average person with little or no background would find this book beneficial.

As an individual who has traveled down the well trodden pathway of mutual fund investment and have stumbled and admittedly lost my way this book has proved to be extremely valuable.

Certainly much of the practical investment psychology offered in this guide is just plain common sense - the one thing that many of us through out the window or never give thoughts too.

Let me summarize: determine your goals, study the risks and rewards, steel yourself for the ups and downs of the market, periodically review your investments, made carefully adjustments to your portfolio as required and sit back, take some deep breaths and relax.

Just needs a Robotics Laws update, it only shows 3, when now there are now more laws, look it up in Wikipedia: Laws of Robotics. Be aware the latest publication copyright of this book is 1985 & has only been updated slightly as it mentions in description.

Great casual read for the mathematician

Writing from a graduate student in pure mathematics point of view. Moreover, I am most interested in analysis with quite a bit interest in computability theory, logic, and finite state machine type stuff.

This book is a pretty casual read and is probably not for anyone wanting to ready themselves for AI research (as others have said). However, it is a really interested casual read that (thankfully) does get pretty mathematical. I find the exposition on the heavier math sides to be quite interesting. And, even though the book is definitely outdated, I would assume a lot of the theoretical ideas about AI still hold true for today. Regardless of whether or not uses statistics for AI now, there are a lot of really good ideas in this book I would assume are still important.

In short, I would probably recommend this book to anyone interested in ideas rather than applications in terms of AI. If you are a master at computability type stuff, this book's math exposition might be a little light, but the historical aspects and point of views written in this book probably make it worth it.

With each reading, there is something that I had not noticed before, which makes this a classic introduction.

A great introduction to Turing Machines and basics to other computational theories. Other books, speaking about Turing Machines, are either delves nothing about the technical details or is too mathematical at the start, which makes for bad substitutes for Turing's original writings. Granted there are not much on the German Enigma machines and their encoding and deciphering of messages. This being said about what may enhance the field of artificial intelligence since intelligence may be highly employed in the code breaking of Enigma, it is part of lost history and I doubt that anyone has any files on this aspect to describe something with some originality such as Alan Turing. Nevertheless, this book is both excellently approachable even if one has basic Biology or how computers' working parts represent non-human intelligence can be simulated.
I was able to understand most the material in the first couple of chapters upon first reading, but upon second reading, I was able to find this book very interesting because there were material that I thought that I knew upon first reading, the second time around reveals to me that I don't know them that well to have depth in learning from this highly deserved classic.

Very condensed, concise book

Book is very thin, totaling just 255 pages. A required book for my immunology class for pharmacy school, written by my professor. This is a book you'd be willing to bring to class, not a heavy thick textbook at all.

Great book

I've been programming for the ARM architecture for a short time and I can rate this book as a great place for beginners (the first few chapters are really well explained) and for intermediate programmers (I'm one of them). I can't say it's great for advanced programmers, since I'm not one of them, I leave to the actual advanced professionals.

The chapters are great and very well explained. I especially enjoyed the book from chapter 9 til the end, where I learned quite a few things, and reviewed others that I had to learn the hard way.

Maybe my review isn't as helpful as other's reviews, since I'm not weel spoken, I'm not very experienced and this is my first book about ARM architecture (I have the kindle version and the actual book), but I hope that this review helps you in your decision.

PS: The kindle version has some nasty errors (grammar) and the layout isn't that great, but it's still a great book.

Very clear and detailed, good reference

The authors have done a wonderful job of taking something complicated and making it very simple, without dumbing it down. They explain why and how, and the material is well organized. There are useful reference tables scattered throughout. There is no attempt at humor, and I'm grateful for it.

Highlights include discussions about registers, Arm multiple load/store instructions, the Arm function calling convention, tactics for writing fast C and assembler, DSP implementation, memory management, and assembler code for things like division. The chapters on firmware and basic OS implementation each show a simple yet functional implementation.

My only complaint is that there's nothing practical in here about IO, not even JTAG. The authors have limited themselves to the ARM core only, perhaps because there are many differences between the microprocessors that use it. This makes the title a bit misleading - in my view a System Developer's Guide should have enough information so that you can at least write a "Hello World" program of some sort, even if it doesn't work on everybody's hardware.

So to do anything practical, you'll have to track down a lot more documentation for your specific microcontroller. Still, five stars for the clear, detailed information on the topics it does cover. I will certainly be using it as a reference.

Context switching

This book gave the assembly language instruction example I wanted to see in order to change context on an ARM processor. Context switching, saving and restoration of processor registers, is the heart of a simple tasker I am converting to run on the ARM.
