Entertaining semi-biography of One of America's Best Physicists

Too bad Richard Feynman died so young. He was brilliant. Was his cancer likely caused by exposure to radiation during his work as a young man at Los Alamos? Who knows?
If it hadn't been for him, the cause of the shuttle Challenger explosion probably would never have been discovered. He was tenacious.
Funny, poignant, interesting read.
After reading this book, watch "Fat Man and Little Boy" on DVD with Paul Newman, John Cusak, Laura Linney. Feynman is portrayed in the film. Very good movie about Los Alamos and the creation of the A-Bomb during WWII.

Had potential, but choppy writing and hefty page count hurt.

I requested this because of the pretty cover and the blurb. What I expected was some light, fluffy, fun. Unfortunately, The Lost Boys did not deliver. I struggled to keep reading before I hit 100 pages! I've learned a very valuable lesson though. Always check the page count! This puppy was over 500 pages, unnecessarily long.

Now, the idea for the story had lots of potential. Who doesn't love handsome gentlemen ghosts, graveyards, witchy magic, and boarding schools? My problem was with the execution. The writing style was choppy and the 16 year old MC came across much younger to me, maybe 12? I was wondering if this was more of a middle grade book, but a few mature scenes quickly settled that it's definitely not.

I'm not a writer, but I can certainly identify what works for me and what doesn't. It was overwritten. I don't mean that it had purple prose, but that each scene was described to death. Simple scenes are detailed & repetitive, not counting on the reader to make connections. When someone yells or shoves somebody, we assume they're angry. Being shown and then told in great detail all the time makes the reading drag, so this book was a slow go for me. I believe this story could've been pulled of if it had been edited & chopped down by about 200 pages! I know that's harsh, but it's easier to read less than stellar writing and still appreciate the story if it's a quick read.

I'm giving it 2 stars because this appears to be written by a very young author and I see potential that wasn't quite tapped.

Not as good as I expcted

17 year-old Joe Grey has moved to a new town because of her mom's new job. Her immediate attraction to Tristan has her returning daily to the grave yard where they meet. Soon after arrival she finds out she'll be going to a boarding school and dreads leaving him. One fateful night will affect their future. Will Tristan and Joe be together?

I was pretty excited to get this book. I felt like the premise was good and looked forward to discovering the secret. The author was detailed oriented. There were very few errors. I felt the beginning of the book was really pretty good but I found I lost interest in the highschool drama about 1/2 way through. By that point, I just wanted to finish it.

I did struggle with this book for several reasons. One, I'm not 100% the author knew who she wanted her audience to be. Over all the language and story telling style seemed junior high'ish. The book focused a lot on the going's on at the highschool and highschool drama. But then she throws in minor sexual jokes and themes and alcohol use which, in my opinion, lends it to college age reader.

The other flaw with the book is the unrealistic and/or forced plot creations. For example, when she arrives to school she's accidentally assigned a boy's room. Not only doesn't she or the boy mind but her mom signs a release form to allow her to continue to share a room with a boy. Although times are changed from when I was young, but there's no way I'd been allowed to do that. Nor, despite being a tomboy, would I have been comfortable sharing a room with a boy I just met. That's just one example.

Overall, the book wasn't horrible. It just really needed to move along faster with less filler and have a more targeted audience. I wouldn't either encourage or discourage someone to read the book. I did noticed this is intended to be a trilogy, I'm not sure I'd read either of the two books.

Somewhat Entertaining But Too Ridiculous to Deserve a Higher Rating

I was never a fan of Stephenie Meyer despite her overwhelming fame brought on by the Twilight series. Thus, the tagline in the blurb did more damage than good when it comes to drawing my attention. But one can hardly ever walk away from a ghost story that easy, even though now I wish I had done just that.

Instead of being a heartbreaking mystery romance filled with suspense and tension, The Lost Boys is merely a cliched high school drama that uses ghosts as characters to explain away all the ridiculousness and absurdity one can undoubtedly recognize from the plot. It also suffers severely from the rather infamous trope of "everyone is drop dead gorgeous" by introducing characters that are simply too perfect to be true (This might have fooled and dazzled me in my earlier days, but no-no, not now). Though to Lilian Carmine's credit, she did manage to gain some of my respect by giving a few of them their unique personalities.

As a whole, I found The Lost Boys extremely lacking in the mystery department, but that is partially my own fault since nowhere in the synopsis has promised me anything of that nature. As a matter of fact, the biggest mystery has already been revealed before you even go into the book. Being a "romantic tale of a girl meets ghost", I spent more time than I wanted drowning in boredom while waiting for our MC, Joe, to find out that this handsome young boy she is secretly crushing on is actually a ghost. Even with this lengthy build up, their romance still felt halfhearted but interesting enough to keep me going.

For a 500+ pages book, The Lost Boys is surprisingly easy to read. It didn't give me the feeling of moving a mountain across my shoulders, but it could still be condensed further regardless. Particularly, a round of character elimination would be greatly beneficial as well as removing all the unnecessary subplots. Additionally, Carmine's writing also left much to be desired. Although quite readable, her lack of experience and skill with her craft is fairly obvious to notice, though nothing out of the norm to how you would usually expect from a debut author.

Without a doubt, The Lost Boys can be enjoyable for many others, so long as you have the proper mindset and expectations before starting it. But for me, it failed to provide excitement and unpredictability for which I was seeking. Nevertheless, I will probably check out the next book just to see how things have progressed, but that will be a story for another day.

A different flavor of a galaxy far, far away

First - the hardcover trilogy edition: 10/10

I love the size and the convenience of having Dark Empire I-III in one complete volume. The binding is great and the colors pop off of the page. This is the definitive edition.

Second, the content: 9/10

I consider myself an avid explorer of the Expanded Universe - but mostly I read the novels. I have read relatively few Star Wars comics, and for some reason I have avoided Dark Empire because I've heard hardcore fans complaining about the resurrection of the Emperor, and the whole state of the galactic civil war in Dark Empire.

I would liken this to Splinter of the Mind's Eye (an early SW novel) - does it fit in 100% with the rest of the EU? No. Is it a helluva lot of fun? YES. Read Dark Empire - it's a different flavor of Star Wars. But in a fun, classic way. Han Solo is perfect, and we get to see a new side of Luke that is thought provoking and sets up an epic story if nothing else.

Read Dark Empire, and buy this edition.

Almost Mandatory

First things first: I do not own the Trilogy HC sold here and cannot attest to any bonus content, its presentation, etc. I have, however, read the original stories collected here. The title, "Dark Empire Trilogy," is misleading as "Empire's End" was a two-issue coda to "Dark Empire II." Know that going into this, or you'll likely feel cheated when you realize how brief the supposed third act of this really is.

Readers should also place this in its proper historical context. "Dark Empire" was the first "Star Wars" comic published by Dark Horse; Marvel's last issue had been published years earlier. It came on the heels of Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" and these two projects completely resurrected the entire franchise. I personally liked Tom Veitch's writing on that first mini-series; I felt he did a great job not just capturing the familiar characters as we knew them, but that he also gave a believable idea of what became of them since last we saw them. My chief complaint was that the return of Palpatine and Boba Fett were both unnecessary and contrived. Still, it seemed like someone was going to have to bring back Boba in the Expanded Universe and at least it was out of the way early.

"Dark Empire II" was, for my money, a complete let-down. I'd hoped to see Veitch take the story in a new direction, and instead it felt like much of that second series was either recycled from other "Star Wars" ideas or just wasn't compelling. I can't say I blame Veitch; by this point there was a marked editorial voice ensuring that all "Star Wars" EU stories spoke with the same voice. Dedicated readers may have felt rewarded when one book name-checked a character or situation from another, but I found it completely stifled any meaningful creativity. "Empire's End" was published directly after "Dark Empire II" and continued its story so in that regard I always felt like those two issues were really "Dark Empire II" #'s 7 and 8, but they do feel detached from the preceding series. I never quite made much sense of the thing; was it meant to reward me as a reader, or just hit me up for another $5.00?

Still, no "Star Wars" library would be complete without "Dark Empire" if only for the role it played in reviving interest in "Star Wars" as a comic book property. Cam Kennedy's watercolor art may take some getting used to, but I dig it. I can't say whether you'll find "Dark Empire II" and "Empire's End" as disappointing as I did, but if you do you may find yourself regretting this purchase; on the other hand, it's not much more than the cost of Dark Empire I (Star Wars) by itself and you may as well at least have the remainder of Veitch's story in one volume, right?

Could have been great, but was reduced to good.

This really would have beem a great next set of movies after Return of the Jedi. Well this and/or the Tim Z trilogy. The best aspect of this set is the art in the first two sections. the watercolor artwork is really beautiful and epic looking at times. Like many of the reviewers, I had to drop a star for the third section, which is very short and wraps up the good story a little abruptly.

In all, this as a fun read, and is great in moments, but just dies in the end.

Great new paranormal series!

I've read other books by Amy Blankenship, but this one is by far my favorite. Lots of paranormal action going on and great, steamy sex scenes. (That scene in the dance cage...yowza!) This is the first book in the Blood Bound series and I can't wait to read more about these characters in upcoming books. It has multiple story lines going on, but they're all woven together very well. You can tell the authors are planning for multiple books in this series. I'm hoping it's a long series because I'm really enjoying the world they've created. Lots of great characters have been introduced in this first book. I can't wait to see how things turn out for Kane...

All in all, a recommended read for all paranormal romance fans.

Great Start!!

This has the ability to be a really good series. The conflict starts with the leaders of two groups of shape shifters, cougars and jaguars, fighing over a wrong that was done to a vampire named Kane, because of them. That is basis for the story. The vampire wants revenge, but what he is doing in the name of "justice" is wrong, and ends up hurting a lot of innocent people. Is it to late for him? How about the people he hurts? You can feel the anger and hate in him, but also the hurt and despair. You want Kane to realise his wrongs and fix them, because you want him to find his happily ever after, especially because of what was done to him.

Then there is the two groups of shifters. They were once friends, but not any longer. When one of the jaguar shifters finds his mate, will he be able to keep her, or will Kane go to any lengths to achieve his revenge, even if this jaguar was innocent?

I don't want to give a lot away, because there is so much more to the story then that, but I don't want to spoil it for others. Just let me say if you like the paranoramal, and some romance as well, then this book is a must read!!

Moon Dance is the first book of the Blood Bound series by Amy Blankenship, and was such a fast and fun read. This book will have you falling over in laughter and love from page one. the shifters, vampires, and fallen angels bring the best of Paranormal Romance in to one great series. I give it a 5 star rating and i will be reading the next one as soon as possible. Amy blankenship has definetly a great tallent to grab a reader at the first page, and makes u want to keep reading till you are crying when you realise you just read the last page.

"If we are not teaching people how to be saved, it is perhaps because we have forgotten the tragedy of being lost! If we're not teaching the message of forgiveness, it may be because we don't remember what it was like to be guilty. And if we're not preaching the cross, it could be that we've subconsciously decided that -- God forbid -- somehow we don't need it."

I have just finished reading Max Lucado's, Six Hours One Friday: Living in the Power of the Cross. It is a powerful account of the last hours of Jesus' life and the account of his crucifixion. Max writings are very descriptive and immediately draw you in. He explains that because of Jesus' willing death on the cross your life has meaning and a purpose. Because of Christ's finished work on the cross, death does not have the final word.

He broke the book into three sections: My Life is Not Futile, My Failures are Not Fatal, My Death is Not Final. Max very powerfully explains that our lives have incredible meaning and purpose because of what Jesus did for all of us. He explains a powerful lesson that our failures don't define us in God's eyes and finally, Max assures the reader that through Scripture and Christ's death, death does not have the final word in our lives...We will all be reunited in the end with Christ.

This was a great, inspirational book and I would highly recommend it. It's great for a personal read or with a small group as it has a study guide for every chapter at the end.

About the Author
Jorij Abraham is Founder of the eCommerce Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to help organizations and industries improve their ecommerce activities. He advises companies about ecommerce strategy, omni-channel development and product information management. Jorij has focused his career on ecommerce and the business side of product information management. While writing part of this book he has been Director of Consulting at Unic. Before he has been ecommerce manager for several organizations like the Bijenkorf, a Dutch up-market department store chain and TUI, Europe's largest travel organization. At Sanoma Media, Benelux's largest print and online media company, he has been online publisher for Food & Travel. Currently, Jorij is Director Research & Advise at Ecommerce Europe, an industry association representing the interests of more than 4.000 companies in 10 European countries selling products via digital means.

The first book about PIM

Writing a book about PIM is not an easy task, especially at this stage of its life. PIM is an emerging discipline that while it’s been around for almost 20 years (when it wasn’t called PIM), its popularity is rising “due, to a considerable extent, to the rapid growth of e-commerce and the popularity of online stores .” For those who want an easy and not sim-plistic introduction to PIM, Mr. Abraham’s book is a dish that cannot be skipped. The book emphasises the importance of accurate, fresh, and consistent product information across all sales channels. The first two chapters are an introduction to PIM. The author does a great job at pointing out business benefits of PIM and underscoring the impact of PIM in the enterprise. I also like the focus on PIM as a set of comprehensive processes as opposed to a bunch of functionality. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of PIM.
The subsequent three chapters (3,4,5) deal with the nitty gritty of PIM in terms of data model, business processes, and print. Particularly efficacious are the descriptions of the various processes that any respectable PIM implementation has to manifest. For example, the pages about taxonomies and attributes are simple and to the point. These are funda-mental aspects of PIM that any PIM practitioner has to master.
The second part of the book (chapters 6, 7) targets companies that face the challenge to make a business case for PIM and subsequently select the right vendor. It is the author’s conviction that these two chapters would assist decision makers greatly to a point that they will understand more about PIM than many PIM sales reps out there. Unfortunately, this is an easy win...the PIM skill set of many salespeople is embarrassing. But that’s an-other story. I tend to agree that these chapters are a great start to select the right PIM. I also think though that the nuances the real world presents you when facing the challenge of justifying a PIM investment are far more intricate that the book lets on. For example, the positioning of PIM in the enterprise is a daunting task given if you think that governance , enterprise architects, all the business units, and a myriad of stakeholders have to agree on a quite often disruptive solution. The book also lacks a treatment of how the cloud model is spawning a variety of PIM solutions (e.g. Contenix, Salsify, Akeneo, just to new but a few) that are rocking the boat of the established PIM vendors.
To his credit, it’s hard to keep pace with these trends. I suspect that they are not passing fad, though. The two appendixes are an interesting addition to the book and to the overall case that the author is making, namely, without PIM as a foundational layer for the enterprise digital strategy, operational costs and missed opportunity to grow are and will be first citizens. The first appendix collects nine relevant cases of company choosing PIM, including Coca Cola, and Nikon. The second appendix is a summary of the major PIM players, ranging from the big ones (e.g. Informatica, Stibo) to medium and small ones. The list is not ex-haustive and some of the vendors are not hard-core PIM or have extended their offer to include other modules.
Overall, a must have book for those interested in PIM. PIM is gaining momentum, and will be the de-facto solution for product information in the next 5 years.

About the Author

N. Scott Momaday is a novelist, a poet, and a painter. Among the awards he has received for writing are the Pulitzer Prize and the Premio Letterario Internazionale "Mondello." He is Regent's Professor of English at the University of Arizona, and he lives in Tucson with his wife and daughter.

A fragmented, but nicely written story

Is how I would describe Momaday's House Made of Dawn. I've seen my share of attempts to write about Indian spirituality that often fall short or misrepresent them all together but Momaday has done a superb job. Having been to my share of Native American Church ceremonies his description of the peyote meeting was pretty dead on accurate. How he describes the Indians of the Southwest, our ways and the beautiful but harsh lands we occupy all ring true. As well as the struggles that many face trying to go through life in between two different worlds.

There are several characters in the book who receive quite a bit of attention but the story really revolves around Abel, a Pueblo man who returns to his village after his service in the Second World War. His life is shattered by the war and alcoholism and he eventually ends up in Los Angeles struggling to get by. A story very well known to many Natives. While it is well written it can be very frustrating to read through. Characters are cycled through the first person and third person. The story's timeline is all over the place with flashbacks being a frequency. Still his language that he uses to pull the story together is beautifully done.

An epic tale set in a Navaho reservation where many a Western movie was filmed

A tale of contemporary Navaho life in the Four Corners area of the American West. Brilliant writing in a pared-down epic style that I haven't encounterd before - well, maybe Cormac McCarthy's writing could be described in those terms, but this is another beast entirely, and feels like an authentically Native American voice* which I lack the skills to describe, except to say if you are familiar with, - and love - both The Odyssey and Ulysses, you will appreciate that none of the characters in this novel would hold still for Homer's describing the crockery in Odysseus' great hall, or Joyce's intrcate appreciation of a mid-day Dublin pub circa 1906.

*(altho my acquaintences on that reservation have asked me, in the past (last visit 15-20 years ago) to use the term "Indian")

Beautiful and evocative prose

This Pulitzer-Prize winning novel is equal parts story - of Abel, a young Indian who moves between the white and Indian worlds - and painting - of the land and its inhabitants, both human and not. It can be a confusing tale, as the characters think back to earlier events, but in the end the effort expended is more than repaid. If you love lyrical and muscular writing, this book is for you.
