Non-fiction at its best

Insightful, meticulously researched and beautifully written, The Steal explores shoplifting as a cultural phenomenon -- crime, disease, and protest -- that has always been with us and always will be. No one can stop shoplifting-- not the stores with their increasingly sophisticated anti-theft devices, not the police who arrest shoplifters, and not the psychologists who treat them because we shoplift for reasons that are too deeply embedded in our society to ever go away.The book benefits enormously from not only the author's tireless pursuit of every angle of her subject, but also her deep familiarity with the literature of shoplifting. Yet Mrs. Shteir wears her learning lightly. The Steal is as much fun to read as it is informative.

INTERESTING INSIGHT

As we know, there are professional shoplifters/criminals, and others that act on impulse or needing something beyond their financial means. This is a good one to read by law enforcement folks, and especially store/mall security types. The shoplifters cause us to pay for the losses by the stores, and of course, tie up the police and courts with minor crimes. Good insight. I liked it.

Bright and sparkling

Billing itself as the first genuine study of shoplifting, Rachel Shtier's charming cultural history THE STEAL examines the ways in which stealing merchandise has been around for centuries but has exploded particularly in the United States in the last fifty years. Shtier offers a wealth of enjoyable and intelligent anecdotes that stretch from ancient Greece to the present day involving theft. Did you know, for example, that one of the landmark early court cases of shoplifting in England in the early nineteenth century was committed by Jane Austen's aunt? (The prosecution could not explain adequately why a wealthy woman would stoop to petty thievery, and so she got off, in a pattern that would be replicated for decades in the next two centuries in cases involving "thrill shoplifters"). Shtier's prose is as fizzing and as enjoyable as her sensational topic merits: this is a book that does not position itself as a heavily scholarly study of shoplifting, but rather as an enjoyable cultural history of the crime marketed to a broadly popular audience. As such, the work does not freight itself with either footnotes or heavy sociological analysis, and attempts to cover all kinds of bases, from the history of the crime (which Shtier intriguingly argues mushroomed after the appearance of Abbie Hoffman's incendiary STEAL THIS BOOK in 1971) to its effects on merchandise sales today, and to the extraordinary efforts taken by merchants to create anti-theft devices and shaming techniques to combat theft. I found Shtier's prose, her subject matter, and her wealth of material great fun, and her research impressive; my only problems occurred with the book's sometimes confusing organization. (More specific chapter titles to announce her topics would certainly have helped.) But this is a rich and entertaining read overall.

I first came across John Perkins's Confessions of an Economic Hit Man a few years ago when I was living and working in Abu Dhabi, a tiny city-state which serves as the capital of a conglomerate of similar city-statesincluding Dubaiall collectively known as the United Arab Emirates, or the UAE, which itself is located on the eastern coast of the Arabian peninsula.

And although the UAE had been peaceful and prosperous for many decades, I couldnt help but think about the fact that I was in the middle of the most dangerously volatile and highly militarised region on Earth.

The year was 2008. The war in Iraq was still rumbling on and, in my more paranoid moments, I thought the conflict could escalate in a flash and instantly embroil other countries in the region.

What I did not spend a single moment worrying about, however, was the unprecedented terror caused by the global economic crisis. Who did? I didnt think about it because, unlike armies, banks and financial institutions are forces of a largely invisible kind of activity. And I never knew finance could cause so much devastation.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website.

He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers.

Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born.

The job of EHMs (and their colleagues) is to persuade countries to take out loans worth billions of dollars, often to pay for infrastructure projects that the EHMs themselves recommend, writes John Perkins in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.

If the persuasion tactics of the EHMs fail, the CIA "jackals", as he calls them, take over and often assassinate the leaders of governments who do not co-operatesuch as Jaime Roldos, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama.

Perkins starts his story by wondering how he had grown up to be involved in such a "dirty business". He remembers Ann, and her uncle, Frank, who suggests working for the NSA and being a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. He also realised that, although reporting a story through the medium of television is obviously different from telling it through a newspaper or magazine, the heart and mind of every media company is researching and writing. In his spare time, Abdul likes to spend time with his family, cooking, eating, watching films, listening to music, reading and writing. When he goes out he likes to watch movies at the best cinemas, see live music performances, and eat at good restaurants. He also loves gardening, fishing and going for long walks.

Ambedkar a failure?

Christopher Jaffrelot, Director of the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales, has written a well-balanced account of history of untouchability in modern India in general and Dr Ambedakr in particular.
Ambedkar was born in Mahar community, the largest scheduled caste community in Maharashtra -- the land of Mahars -- the birth place of anti-Brahmin movement, which gave inspiration to such virulent anti-Brahmins such as Periyar and Anna Dorai. He was born as Ambavade, Ambedkar was his teacher, a Brahmin, who took an interest in Ambavade and gave his own name to him. Thanks to Maharaja of Baroda, who had anti-Brahmin sentiments, he was able to go to Columbia University in the USA, on the condition that he works for the king for 10 years. Unfortunately, when Ambedkar returned, he was unable to work for the Maharaja because he could not get a lodge in the city, nobody wanting to board an untouchable. Dejected, he resigned and went back to Bombay. He, with the help of another Maharaja, of Kollhapur, who was worried about Brahmins' aspirations for their `long-lost' power, went to England and got his degree in economics. The book gives a good description of agonies of the caste system, with its ----ascending order of hatred and descending order of contempt -as Ambedkar used to frequently say, Ambedkar's efforts to unite the untouchables, his own political ambitions, his role in writing of the Constitution and finally, his religious conversion to Buddhism .
Caste System: Before Phule's anti-Brahmin movement, there was an effort by others in the community, notably the great poet Chokamela, who saw good things in Brahmins and made efforts to emulate them. Phule not only derided these efforts at `Sanskritization' but attacked the Bhakti movement of Chokamela, as that `equalized all castes only spiritually, but not socially'. Phule and later Ambedkar, claimed Mahars are persecuted Buddhists who became decadent because of segregation and inhuman treatment by the caste Hindus, this being the reason why Mahars consider Brahmins as inauspicious and don't permit them to enter their colonies and begging was not considered as a charity but a right. His efforts to unite dalits was not more successful because, Ambedkar although brilliant was not a great organizer and the popularity of Gandhiji among dalits was so high that Ambedkar had to back off in confrontations with Gandhi, the most notable of these battles being the separate vote block the British agreed to create as wanted by Ambedkar. Gandhi went on a fast and Ambedkar relented. Ambedkar claimed that Mahars were not Hindus, but fought for admitting them into Hindu temples and stated very early in his career that he was not going to die as a Hindu.
Interestingly, Ambedkar did not blame the Brahmins for the caste system, instead blaming the Scriptures which described the caste system, saying that even non-Brahmins wanted to follow what is written in the Scriptures out of devotion or fear. The `Scripture' that is quoted most often is Manusmrithi and Purusha Sukta which states Brahmins originated from the mouth of the Lord and shudras only from the legs. He was against reserved quotas for the dalits.
Religious conversion: Ambedkar seriously considered conversion in 1936. He openly wrote about the three religions he was considering, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism, mostly analyzing what each of these of religions have to offer in terms of economic, political and social power to his community as hundreds of thousands of dalits were willing to convert to the religion of his choice. It is interesting to note that Christians showed no interest, saying that they did not want anybody to convert to Christianity for any reason other than spiritual, while the leaders of other two religions began to court Ambedkar. Even Shankaracharya of Karweer peet encouraged them to convert to Sikhism saying that there is really no hope for real change in the Hindu caste system.
When Ambedkar did convert just few months before his death, he did seem to do it for the right reasons. He rejected Christianity and Islam because they are not of Bharatiya culture. Many Mahars converted in the next 10 years, so much so the number Buddhists went up from 2500in 1950's to 2.5 million in 1960's. In my opinion, while it is hard to call him failure, he definitely did not achieve his full potential, because his motivation was hatred, which one can argue is understandable. If we break the ascending order of hate, may be that will eliminate the descending order of contempt and vice versa.

A Sophisticated, Informative Read

Jaffrelot has written a concise book on B.R. Ambedkar, engaging some very important scholarship on the man. Those familiar with the leader of the Mahar Untouchables (Ambedkar converted to Buddhism, opposed the caste system, opposed "Gandhism", and was instrumental in writing the Indian Constitution) will appreciate this book. The author largely defends Ambedkar while admitting that Ambedkar was not successful in accomplishing many of his goals. For those unfamiliar with Ambedkar, Buddhism, or India, this will be a tough read. Jaffrelot does not have a glossary, and expects his readers to be fairly conversant with the context of Ambedkar's life. So experts will love the book, while novices will find it difficult to digest.

As each successive Mikado came to the throne, he built himself a new palace, and founded a new capital; there had been more than sixty capitals before the Nara Period. Such shifting was not conducive to the development of literature and the arts, and it was not until a permanent government was established at Nara that these began to flourish. This is scarcely the place to trace the history of Japanese literature, but fully to understand these charming "Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan," it is necessary to know a little of the world they lived in, to be able to feel their atmosphere and recognize their allusions. We know a good deal about Japan to-day, but the Japan with which we are familiar only slightly resembles that of the Diaries. Centuries of feudalism, of "Dark Ages," have come between. We must go behind all this and begin again. We have all heard of the "Forty-seven Ronins" and the No Drama, of Shoguns, Daimios, and Samurais, and many of us live in daily communion with Japanese prints. It gives us pause to reflect that the earliest of these things is almost as many centuries ahead of the Ladies as it is behind us. "Shogun" means simply "General," and of course there were always generals, but the power of the Shoguns, and the military feudalism of which the Daimios and their attendant Samurais were a part, did not really begin until the middle of the twelfth century and did not reach its full development until the middle of the fourteenth; the No Drama started with the ancient religious pantomimic dance, the Kagura, but not until words were added in the fourteenth century did it become the No; and block colour printing was first practised in 1695, while such famous print artists as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige are all products of the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. To find the Ladies behind the dark military ages, we must go back a long way, even to the century before their own, and so gain a sort of perspective for them and their time.

A fascinating read of real diaries Japan c.1000ce

Reading the real diaries of women in Japan c.1000 ce takes you back to a time and place that is so different yet seems so familiar to today. While the West was struggling out of the Dark Ages, there existed this culture of high literacy and sophisticated aesthetics,albeit to a select few. In no way a perfect society, it is fascinating how the mores shaped and played out historically.

Slow, but interesting.

Only for history buffs, history buffs who like detail, rather than the 'big picture.' Poor Court Ladies of Old Japan - seems that they spent most of their time changing outfits for different times of the day, different seasons of the year, different ceremonies and gatherings at court. A lot of words were devoted to descriptions of the many layers of robes or kimono a lady and her maid could contrive. Yes, some of these women wrote poetry, some (maybe all) had lovers sneaking in under cover of darkness, but many of them must have lived lives of unrelieved boredom. The most entertaining things at court were gossip and games and any occasion for a little party. The diaries move slowly and gracefully, just as life at court must have moved, describing meals and the preparation for meals - which lady in waiting would serve the Empress. Men and women each had their own world, mostly meeting for moon-viewing parties, poetry contests, and perhaps a game of shuttlecock. I'm not surprised at the women writing, they had very little else to do.

Don't buy this book

Really. I braved the last review, and threw away $7. English and French is all mixed up, so it's useless even if you're fluent.

Great translation, but the e-book is messed up.

I was thrilled when I found this; I've been wanting a decent kindle edition of Rimbaud's poems for some time. I was so excited I bought it without looking at the preview, which was unfortunate, because something went horrible wrong with the e-book conversion. The book is supposed to be the original French with facing English translations. In the Kindle edition, however, the English and French are randomly mixed up; poems will have a few French stanzas, then a couple English; or, the English translation will abruptly end, with the remainder randomly inserted into the next poem. Extremely frustrating. Please fix this Amazon, or, better yet, create a decent Kindle edition of the Wyatt Mason translations.

The Barbarians Are Coming

Werenight (1994) is the first Fantasy novel in the Gerin the Fox series. It was originally published in 1979 as two separate works -- Wereblood and Werenight -- under the pseudonym of Eric Iverson. It was republished -- with some syntactical changes -- in 1994 as a single novel.

The Empire of Elabon has long abandoned the northern marches. Only one pass remains unblocked -- but well guarded -- to keep the Trokme out of the Empire. The Empire isn't even collecting taxes from the barons of the northern marches.

In this novel, Gerin is the second son of the Baron of Fox Keep in the northern marches. He went to Cassat to become a scholar and a mage. He studied history and natural philosophy for two years and had begun the study of magic. Then his father and older brother were killed in an ambush by the Trokme and he had to return home as the baron.

Van is a wanderer from Shanda. He is very large and swift. He has seen much and is proficient in several languages.

Ricolf the Red is a baron south of Fox Keep. Gerin had spent some time with Ricolf on his way to Cassat.

Elise is the daughter of Baron Ricolf. She definitely has a mind of her own.

Wolfar of the Axe is a northern baron. He has more than a touch of wereblood. Gerin suspects him of wicked plans.

Rihwin is a Cassat noble. He is visiting the keep of Ricolf.

In this story, the Trokmoi have a new wizard with great powers. The wizard has caused a severe rainfall onto Gerin's land and then spanned the Niffet River with a magical, shining bridge. The Trokmoi steal his cattle, pigs, sheep, and serfs.

Any villeins that try to stand up to the Trokmoi are slaughtered. Gerin defeats the Trokme Chieftain, but his chariot driver is the warlock and sets a demon on Gerin. After the demon is beat down into the mud, the wizard disappears.

Gerin and Van head toward Cassat to hire a wizard. On the way, they warn the barons that the Trokmoi will be returning. When they reach the Bevon lands, they discover that civil war has erupted upon the death of the baron. They cautiously hasten through the barony.

Ricolf is glad to see Gerin, but disturbed about the news. He is busy choosing a husband for Elise. Gerin had received at invitation, but had to decline because of illness.

Elise has grown up since he last saw her. She is also surprising well read in the classics. She and Gerin have several pleasant talks about literature.

Ricolf selects Wolfar to be Elise's husband. That night, Elise turns up at Gerin's door prepared to leave the barony. Gerin cannot convince her to stay, so he takes her to Cassat. She leaves a note for her father explaining her actions.

They travel through the haunted night until far enough away from the keep. Elise elaborates on her plans to visit her mother's brother. Then Gerin and Van stand watches through the night.

When Gerin reaches Cassat, they drop off Elise at her uncle's mansion and head for the Sorcerers' Collegium. After they reach the front of the line, Gerin explains his situation, but is told that no wizards are currently available. He refuses the idea of waiting several months and leaves the school.

Gerin wants to get drunk, so he heads for the nearest bar. There he finds Rihwin, who had left Ricolf's lands shortly after the proposed bride fled the scene. Gerin discovers that Rihwin is a trained wizard who hadn't graduate as planned.

This tale takes Gerin and his friends back to Fox Keep. On the way, they learn that the Trokme have invaded the north. Refugees crowd the highway.

Strange things happened to Gerin. The next installment in this sequence is Prince of the North. These tales are also included in the omnibus Wisdom of the Fox.

Highly recommended for Turtledove fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, magecraft, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

Even a juvenile turtledove is worth reading, but the author is clearly learning his craft here. I keep reaching for a red pencil as if he were in one of my creative writing classes.

I really enjoyed the surprises in the story as well as with the types of characters that Turtledove created. It's really good sword n sorcery stuff without the usual predictable plot.

Really nice feel for the fantasy world that the author creates.

Aurora (Arshaluys) Mardiganian (January 12, 1901 - February 6, 1994) was an Armenian American author, actress and a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Aurora Mardiganian was the daughter of a prosperous Armenian family living in Chmshgatsak twenty miles north of Harput, Ottoman Turkey. Witnessing the deaths of her family members and being forced to march over 1,400 miles, during which she was kidnapped and sold into the slave markets of Anatolia, Mardiganian escaped to Tiflis (modern Tbilisi, Georgia), then to St. Petersburg, from where she traveled to Oslo and finally, with the help of Near East Relief, to New York. In New York, she was approached by Harvey Gates, a young screenwriter, who helped her write and publish a narrative that is often described as a memoir titled Ravished Armenia (full title Ravished Armenia; the Story of Aurora Mardiganian, the Christian Girl, Who Survived the Great Massacres (1918). The narrative Ravished Armenia was used for writing a film script that was produced in 1919, Mardiganian playing herself, and first screened in London as the Auction of Souls. The first New York performance of the silent film, entitled Ravished Armenia took place on February 16, 1919, in the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, with society leaders, Mrs. Oliver Harriman and Mrs. George W. Vanderbilt, serving as co-hostesses on behalf of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief. Mardiganian was referred to in the press as the Joan of Arc of Armenia, describing her role as the spokesperson for the victims of the horrors that were then taking place in Turkey and the catalyst for the humanist movement in America. In the 1920s Mardiganian married and lived in Los Angeles until her death on February 6, 1994. (wikipedia.org)
