Disappointing
By science woman
This was a disappointment to me because I am a Mary Balogh fan. I did not believe that Joel fell in love with Camille. The length of one novel is not enough time to show a nice guy realizing that a cold shrew is a good person in her heart. Don't read the next paragraph if you don't want to know the plot.
Spoiler alert:
This novel went off the rails for me when the h and h had sex. Totally unbelievable! (If a sex scene is necessary to the plot, such as in A Christmas Promise when her Dad insists they consummate, that is different. This was gratuitous sex.)
The h and h have both experienced rejection because of their illegitimacy, and then they sleep together with no precautions! (Even back then there were ways to avoid pregnancy.) This was totally unnecessary to the story and made both h and h total hypocrites.
She would have been fired as a teacher back then for going anywhere near a single man's home.
Uxbury would not have insulted Camille in front of her numerous male relatives and friends. He is portrayed as a scumbag, not as stupid.
I would have given this a one, but the last part about adopting the orphans was very touching.

Better than the first book...3.5
By lark
FYI this book is not a standalone.
Camille is trying to build a life in a world that's foreign to her and has begun teaching at the orphanage. That's where she meets Joel who is also illegitimate, grew up in the orphanage, and has become a successful portraitist.
As Joel observed Camille prior to painting her portrait, we saw the many faces of Camille, we saw her evolve and gradually adapt to her new circumstances. Her character developed throughout the novel and I liked her. She showed great strength of character. She was a great heroine. Joel was kind, empathetic and I liked him too until...
The story went off the rails during the first love scene. Joel had had a shattering experience and desperately needed comfort from Camille. After he had calmed, he ushered her to bed. That was gauche...no wooing, no nothing...it came out of nowhere, but okay, I went with it. But. Camille was a virgin and Joel showed her no tenderness. When he finished, he hopped out of bed and said, "thank you." I'm surprised he didn't drop a few shillings on the bed! Joel was a boor and he lost his luster after that. I think this episode was very poorly written; I was depressed for some time after that.
The end was a contrived, over-sentimental bit of claptrap.
Disappointed and glad it's over. I'm still game for book three.....ever hopeful.

A Good Regency, Ok for Mary Balogh
By Amazon Customer
This book is the second in Mary Balogh’s Wescott Regency era series. While this is part of a series, it is easy to read as a standalone. In the prior book, the readers first met Camille and Joel, the featured couple of this book. Camille’s unfortunate circumstance is that she was born into society, only to learn that her father had deceived her whole family and had a prior wife, making his marriage to her mother, and her birth, illegitimate. With this came a great fall in her position in society.
Under her new circumstances, she decides to challenge herself to live within her new means and station, not accepting monetary help from her grandmother. In addition to this, she decides to take on the role of her newly found half-sister, who with their father’s death elevated in society. Camille not only becomes the teacher at the orphanage that her half-sister was raised and taught in but decides to move into the teacher’s quarters there. This is a stark contrast to her prior life of luxury. Camille has much to learn about herself.
Out of all of Mary Balogh’s heroines throughout the years, Camille is the hardest one to empathize and fall in love with as a reader. Fortunately, Joel, the hero, fell in love with her right on schedule. Joel is an art teacher in the school who was formerly in love with Camille’s half-sister. The mystery of his background unravels in the book as the two fall in love and ultimately marry.
If you love Mary Balogh or Regency books, of course, this is a must read.
